Job overview

Due to a rapid increase in pupil numbers, our Early Years School is expanding. We will be opening an extra Nursery class in January 2023, at the beginning of Spring Term (Term 2), and we are seeking a dynamic and passionate Nursery Officer/Teaching Support Assistant to join our Early Years teaching team. The successful candidate will ideally have knowledge and experience of the EYFS curriculum.

About The British School of Amsterdam

The British School of Amsterdam is a not-for-profit school providing world class teaching and learning for children from 3 to 18 years old organised into three sections: Early Years (3-6 years), Juniors (6-11 years) and Seniors (11-18 years) each with its own Head and team of staff. We currently have over 1,000 pupils enrolled at the school.

Key purpose of the Job

The Nursery Officer / Teacher Support Assistant works in partnership with the Class Teacher and under the direction of the Early Years leadership team. The holder of this position will normally spend most of their time working in classrooms supporting teaching and learning and helping teachers in the day to day running of the classroom, as well as any administration required. The remaining time is used to support the wider needs of the Early Years school section by helping with administrative tasks and other duties as requested by the leadership team and under direction of the Class Teacher.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide support and assistance to class teachers in the day to day operating environment of the classroom.
  • Work in partnership with the class teacher to help support the teaching and learning in the classroom. This can involve working with individual children or groups.
  • Complete any tasks that could be reasonably expected of the position that support the children and the classroom environment as requested by the class teacher
  • Perform any other reasonable duties prescribed by the leadership team of the school
  • Be a team player who puts the needs of the children, the team and the school first
  • Adhere to the school’s policies and procedures
  • Comply with Health & Safety regulations
  • Comply with the school’s requirements for the storage and security of pupil records at all times
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Take part in the wider life of the school e.g. attending school assemblies
  • Supervising playtime or lunchtime duties (when required to do so)
  • Attend meetings and the yearly INSET training
  • Keep up-to-date with school information e.g. bulletins, minutes of meetings
  • Help to maintain and organise resources in the school pertaining to the child or children you work with
  • Keep the school team up-to-date with a focus on the child’s needs
  • Support and uphold the mission, vision and values of the School

In line with UK regulations, the child ratio in the Nursery setting is 1:8. If a member of the nursery staff is absent, nursery nurses in the Early Years may be required to cover to ensure the ratio is maintained. During times of cover, the ratio is not exceeded and there is a teacher present.

You are not expected to assume the duties of a class teacher, or take responsibility for the quality of the teaching and learning. This is a support role, and whilst you will be working with the children; responsibility for the day to day management of the class, the planning, assessment and the quality of the teaching and learning of the lesson remains with the class teacher. If a class teacher is absent from work and you feel able to support the class with the supply teacher present (if they are in the middle of a project for example), then the school is grateful for this support. This however, is at your discretion.

Please notice this is a fixed contract from 3-1-2023 until 13-7-2023
