Job overview

If you are a caring, committed and inspirational Prep teacher who seeks to join a thriving and supportive Prep school focused on being the very best it can be, this could be just the post for you.  We seek enthusiastic teachers with energy and creative ideas to join our Prep School Teaching team. NQT's are very welcome to apply, and a mentor would be allocated to support successful candidates through their probation year to achieve full GTCS status.

The maternity posts, which will be from August 2025 - June 2026, represent an exciting opportunity for inspiring, dynamic and caring teachers who are passionate about ensuring that children achieve their very best. We seek individuals with the commitment, drive and strong communication skills to raise attainment and to make a real difference to children's lives. The successful applicants will be expected to be flexible and contribute to co-curricular activities, which are very important at The Academy.  We are particularly interested in hearing from teachers with the ability and readiness to run a co-curricular club or coach a sport. We welcome applications from all gifted teachers and the posts are suitable for newly qualified entrants to the profession, but all our teachers must be registered with the GTCS.

Academy teachers are encouraged to develop professionally and to enhance their careers by teaching different year groups, as appropriate, by running a range of activities and by commitment to CPD that improves pupil learning.

This role includes the requirement to support the school sports programme (typically rugby or hockey) and/or the School's CCF.

A firm grasp of curricular developments, is important, as are empathy, organisation, and a sense of humour. You are likely to hold an excellent honours degree and must be passionate about motivating young people, inspiring academic and intellectual excellence, and great pastoral care.

You will have an enthusiastic "Can do, will do" attitude and will instil high standards, high expectations and the value of hard work in children, plus the belief that intelligence is not fixed and that abilities can be developed considerably through sensibly focused endeavour.

You will care deeply about children's success and will be skilled at motivating children to work to their full potential. Strong commitment, good communication skills, diplomacy, dynamism, proactivity, teambuilding skills, and the very highest standards are key to this post. So are a calm and nurturing disposition, flexibility, the ability to negotiate and compromise, and being an improving presence.

You will be flexible, adaptable, innovative and a good team player. Above all, you will work very hard and effectively for the children in your care.

The appointments are for August 2025 (at the start of the new school session) - June 2026.

The Glasgow Academy is an ambitious, warm, welcoming, thriving and forward-thinking fully co-educational HMC independent day school of around 1600 pupils aged 3-18. It is highly popular, growing in a planned way over the last 14 years. It consists of the Senior School, of around 800 pupils of 11-18 years of age, and a Preparatory School (which has three sites and also around 800 children, counting all those in Nursery/Kindergarten).

The school gains excellent SQA exam results, and raising academic results further is the central target of its School Improvement Plan. In August 2024, also achieved our best ever performance at National 5 with a pass rate of 99% ( 86% awarded A grades). In S6, our pass rate is 92% for Advanced Higher with 51% of entries awarded grade A.

Beyond academic achievement we want all of our pupils to thrive and contribute to a rapidly developing modern world and to do that we must ensure they leave The Academy with a socially conscious, innovative and global outlook. Our aim is that we provide our pupils with rich learning experiences that best prepare them for life after The Academy also places value on the importance of sustainable education for future generations. Through further development of our local, national and global partnerships our aim is that we have a greater impact on lives within and out with The Academy community.

The school's latest £15 million new building won Best Building in Scotland 2016, the UK's richest architectural prize. The school has invested around £27 million in its facilities over the last decade or so and continues to invest heavily and strategically.
