Job overview

Ark Victoria joined the Ark network in March 2018, with the amalgamation of two provisions in the Small Heath area of Birmingham. Since then, the academy has made fast progress,  with good performance at the early years and KS1 checkpoints and encouraging indicators of strong performance at KS3 and 4.

Ark Victoria is a flourishing all-through school, spanning early years through to KS4 provision. Its first GCSE cohort will graduate in 2020. By then, Ark Victoria Academy will be a dynamic educational community serving more than 1600 students in a mixture of well-designed accommodation.  The school is now ready to develop into a model for excellent all-through education in the city, building on the work of Ark’s other all-through academies to deliver transformational outcomes for the community it serves.

We are looking for a Principal to lead this next chapter of Ark Victoria’s journey. As a creative and tenacious leader, you will build consistent levels of excellence in all phases and continue to deliver great results across the whole school. You will hold exceptionally high expectations for all pupils and give them every opportunity to succeed.

You will be an established secondary leader, with a strong track record as a headteacher or highly successful deputy.  You will have the skill and vision to realise the huge potential of all-through education. Line managing the primary headteacher and the secondary senior team will see you take overall responsibility for the performance of the academy. To do this well you will need to learn quickly, develop strong structures and provide clear strategic direction to the talented staff team. In turn, you will be supported by an experienced regional director.

There is already much to be proud of at Ark Victoria Academy, but we refuse to rest in our pursuit of excellence. As we enter the next phase of our development, we need to build on these successes and embrace future challenges.

Ideal candidates will:

• Be fully aligned to the six Ark Pillars

• Have a clear understanding of what makes a great all-through school

• Be honest, ambitious, resilient, kind and committed

• Possess the technical and behavioural traits to establish a highly successful school

• Be able to demonstrate impact in key areas of provision and outcomes in current or previous roles

• Be excited by, and committed to, supporting practices that will drive great progress in the Ark Birmingham region

• Be network-minded and be able to contribute meaningfully to our strategic development at both regional and network level

With the support of the whole Ark network, this is a rare opportunity to play a crucial role in transforming education in the region, not just an individual school.

If you are interested in finding out more about this opportunity, please contact Corrina on 01273 222 877 or James 01904 567818 to arrange an informal conversation with Gail Peyton, Ark Regional Director.

About the school

Ark Victoria Academy is a large all-through school, which was judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted in May 2019. Teaching and leadership are strengths and teachers demonstrate expert subject knowledge. Time is given for reading, research and intellectual preparation to ensure teachers hone their craft and continue to develop and improve.

At Ark Victoria we have a strong vision for our school with a focus on excellence, for both our students and our staff, which is underpinned by our values:

Aim high, be brave, be kind, keep learning

As part of the Ark network, our staff benefit from strong links with the wider network; particularly with the other Ark schools in Birmingham. We harness expertise and build subject communities so that our teachers can learn from and collaborate with colleagues. As well as networking with colleagues in other Ark schools, our staff receive high quality training and support.

Our approach

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum through each stage of education. We have high expectations, and that includes high academic standards, a business-like approach in the way students present themselves, and outstanding attendance and punctuality. Sport, performing arts and design feature in both the curriculum and extracurricular activities.

Facilities

We have excellent facilities which include an astro-turf sports pitch, a four-court sports hall, a recording studio, two art/DT rooms, a dance studio, a fitness suite and a performance/school hall.

Why work at Ark Victoria

Ark Victoria Academy is an "all through family school". It is an ethos that we have worked so hard to establish since we opened, and which we know is valued by our families. Ark Victoria provides pupils with a unique journey in their education through the curriculum and wide range of opportunities that we offer as an all through school. We support and empower all staff and pupils to become ambitious, resilient, and kind citizens who understand their role in our community and the wider world. Pupils leave us with the skills and qualifications to continue their journey of life-long learning in a university or career of their choice.

Our success would not have been possible without great teachers, which is why we offer the very best training for all our staff. We provide regular coaching sessions and have an open-door policy for teachers so that peers can share learning and best practice. Our training doesn’t stop once you reach a certain level or learn a certain skill – we’ll support you throughout your whole career, from starting out as a trainee to running your own school.  In order to deliver the best training and network events, we offer twice as many training days as standard. Your school will develop and deliver its own training sessions which are responsive to need.
