Job overview

Join Team FCAT

We are looking to appoint a Principal at Blackpool Gateway Academy, part of the Fylde Coast Academy Trust (FCAT). FCAT is a large multi academy trust committed to promoting excellence in teaching, learning and leadership. We have 10 academies locally with 5 primaries, 3 secondaries and 2 all-through from age 3-16. We all share a mission to be “the best we can be” in order to improve the life chances of the children and young people in our care.

The Trust’s recent Ofsted summary evaluation report recognised the strength of our primary pupil outcomes; “Children get off to a good start in the early years, and on the whole, this is sustained across most of the trust’s primary schools. As a result, pupils make good progress at the end of key stage 2 and are well prepared for the next phase of their education” (Ofsted March 2019).

Blackpool Gateway Academy was founded and opened in a brand new building in 2015, now comprising of pupils from Nursery to Year 5; in 2019-2020 the school will have its first Y6 cohort. Situated in one of the most deprived wards in Blackpool, this two-form entry primary school plays a pivotal role in the lives of children and families to raise aspiration and deliver positive outcomes. The staff are vibrant and imbued with moral purpose to make a difference, recognising that children only get one chance to receive the best education. Their commitment is absolute and their enthusiasm, infectious!

Gateway was judged as requiring improvement by Ofsted in summer 2018 which the trust viewed as a fair and accurate evaluation of the academy’s position on its journey of improvement at that time. Having joined FCAT in 2017; since this time Gateway’s staff alongside the trust’s school improvement team have worked determinedly to improve outcomes. The academy is financially secure and the latest three-year plan is forecasting to hold an appropriate level of reserves in the future.  Finances are overseen by the trust but managed by the Principal with support from an experienced finance team. The new Principal is key in the next phase of Gateway’s improvement journey.

This is an exciting opportunity for a leader looking to combine running their own school with the benefit of working closely with an experienced Executive Principal. The FCAT family of academies work effectively together, constantly looking for further ways to collaborate, support and challenge each other. As a Trust, we prioritise professional development, working with our partner Teaching School, The Fylde Coast Teaching School Alliance, to build talent and to support staff at every stage of their careers.

As Principal, you will embody FCAT’s values of pride, ambition, respect, resilience, integrity and excellence so we can be the “best we can be!” You will model outstanding leadership, warmth, challenge and professionalism, setting the highest of expectations for yourself, your pupils and staff.

Blackpool Gateway Academy needs a Principal who is driven to permeate ambition and self-belief into children for whom education is key; if you are seeking an exciting new challenge, please contact us for further details.

Our Academy

Blackpool Gateway Academy is in Bloomfield Ward, close to Blackpool Football Club, adjacent to Seasider’s Way.  It is a two form entry school currently with 351 pupils (2 classes in each year group up to Year 6) catering for pupils from 3-11 years through our nursery provision.

We pride ourselves in the ongoing pursuit of educational excellence with our recent Ofsted inspection judging us to be Good in all areas in May 2022 . We endeavour to work together with parents, governors and the local community to provide high quality care and education through continuous improvement. All children are encouraged to enjoy learning, aim high and show mutual respect for one another through our nurturing culture. We promote independence and hope that all our pupils become ‘life-long learners’. Our core values are embedded through school and help our pupils become respectable citizens of the future.

Gateway Academy is tucked away near Blackpool Football Club but is packed full of lifelong learning. We are part of the Fylde Coast Academy Trust ( FCAT) and our motto, developed by our School Council is ‘Learning today for a brighter tomorrow’ and that is precisely what we aim to do.

We have a wonderful hard working, committed and talented staff workforce across the whole school--they really go the extra mile--along with a parental community that supports one another. We have built up a Gateway appropriate sequential curriculum, ensuring key skills and knowledge are fundamental to teaching and learning, providing children with every opportunity to succeed in their next stages of education.

Covid times taught us so many things, and not least, all things virtual and digital. Our communication systems through Class Dojo along with our online newsletter have allowed for continued information sharing across school life with measures in place to ensure everyone remains as safe as possible.

Reading is our greatest priority; it opens the gates to all other learning and we are passionate believers in the ReadWriteInc phonics scheme which works so well for our children. In addition, another passion is nurture and inclusivity, not just for the children but our entire community, so our journey with Nurture UK developing the six principles of nurture through school helps that holistic development. Our training, to include trauma informed schools and active practice in our journey for all staff and children, is well underway and, we are making good progress.

Gateway Academy continues to grow and evolve. We believe the unique priorities for our school development should centre around ‘possibility, growth and community’ and that this concentration will help support all our children and those around us.
