Job overview

Principal, United World College Changshu China

Vision. Mission. Impact.

Applications are welcomed for the position of Principal at UWC Changshu China. The college opened in 2015; its stunning campus harmoniously combines the natural and man-made environment to offer world-class learning facilities. The college will reach its full capacity in 2017-18.

We have achieved much and our next Principal will build on this early success as an educational leader, a community leader and an organisational leader. You will crystallise a strong educational vision that grounds UWC’s mission and values in the context of China and that inspires the very best in academic and non-academic provision. You will underpin this with strong systems and processes that enable the drive for innovation and continuous improvement.

You will be an experienced leader whose own educational philosophy aligns with UWC’s commitment to make education a force for a more peaceful and sustainable future. You will have a track record of impact in an international context. We seek a leader who understands the importance of diversity, who is culturally-curious and adaptable, and who has imagination, resilience and perspicacity. You will be someone who can move seamlessly from the strategic to the operational; step back, yet be present in the college community; able to see the bigger picture and have an eye for the details that are so critical in a vibrant, residential community.

You will enjoy the support and challenge of an exceptionally committed governing body. The executive committee, as UWC alumni, are passionate about the college’s mission. The circumstances of UWC Changshu’s founding and continuing status in Changshu means that you can expect to work especially closely with the founder and Chair.

You will be excited by the prospect of joining a global movement of 17 colleges from as far afield as China, Canada, Norway and Swaziland, and with the distinctive national committee system that ensures students are selected from within their own communities and cultures. It is a leadership challenge like no other: to set an ambitious vision for the college based on an interpretation of UWC’s mission for the local Chinese context.

Our legacy must be the positive contribution of our alumni during their lifetimes. We also understand our responsibility to make an impact and to foster international understanding in Changshu and in China. Your vision, leadership and wisdom will ensure that we meet this ambitious aim. We hope to offer you a career-defining role; in fulfilling our students’ potential, you will also fulfil your own.
