Salary: L28 (£75,708) – L34 (£87,693) with an additional 10% non-contractual performance based bonus.

University Church of England Academy (UCEA) is a dynamic and ambitious 11-19 Academy, with 716 students currently on roll, in Ellesmere Port, sponsored by the University of Chester. It opened in 2009 on two sites and moved in to a state-of-art new building in November 2012, which provides a bright, motivational and inspirational learning environment. The Academy is ideally located near to the centre of the town and its outstanding facilities are allowing it to have an increasingly positive influence on the wider community.

The Academy has made progress on many fronts since opening but in April 2017 was judged by OFSTED as Special Measures. There is now a very clear strategic plan to improve this situation which is being driven by the Sponsor, the University of Chester Academies Trust, (UCAT).

Importantly, the Academy values of respect, determination, ambition, leadership, integrity and reconciliation are at the heart of everything it does and there is a tangible desire amongst the staff to do the very best for the young people. This includes supporting them in achieving their best in qualifications and developing the character and skills that will bring success in further study and throughout life. It is the team ethos and commitment to learning that provides the solid platform for success and will see the Academy develop into the successful organisation that all stakeholders want it to be.

The Sponsor and Local Governing Body recognise the many challenges that lie ahead and are now looking to appoint a new Principal to harness the many strengths of the Academy and lead it to a confident and sustainable future. This is an outstanding opportunity for the new Principal to drive improvement and create a vision for the future that engages students, staff, parents/carers and the community.

If you are an experienced senior leader in a secondary setting, with a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available then this role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment. Highly motivated and driven, applicants must have an in depth knowledge of excellence in secondary education, a commitment to high quality teaching and learning and should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached. You will need a ‘can-do’ attitude that can inspire and engage students, staff and the local community and will actively promote and nurture the Christian ethos and values.

You will be confident with holding staff accountable and also being accountable for the Academy outcomes, the successful candidate will have an excellent understanding of the qualities required for effective school leadership. You must be confident and positive and have the skills to build relationships with a wide variety of external partners. Above all you will share the Trust’s passion and belief that children, their learning and developing their potential is at the heart of all decisions

UCEA is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. This position is subject to an enhanced DBS check. All applicants will be considered on the basis of suitability for the post regardless of age, sex, race or disability.

About University Church of England Academy - Ellesmere Port

The University of Chester believes that people from all backgrounds should be given the opportunity to achieve their educational goals. It is therefore the proud and enthusiastic Lead Sponsor for Ellesmere Port's Academy.

Under the Academy scheme, the Government's Department for Children, Schools and Families appoints representatives from the sponsors to sit on the new governing body. Among the University's nominations would be its most senior managers, including the Dean of Education and Children's Services.

There is a close relationship between the University and the Academy. Student volunteers already work as ‘mentors', helping GCSE pupils to develop study and organisational skills, build their confidence and perform at their best. ‘Taster days' and residential summer schools on campus also enable pupils to gain a sense of what being a student feels like.

One of the most long-established institutions offering a university education in the country, the University was founded in 1839 by the Church of England as the first place in the UK to offer specialist teacher training. Two of its founders went on to become Prime Ministers (one of whom was also a Chancellor of the University of Oxford) and one an Archbishop of Canterbury.

Now, Education is just one of a choice of more than 130 different subject combinations taught by 500 highly qualified and experienced academic staff as full- and part-time courses. These cover the areas of Applied and Health Sciences; Arts and Media; Business, Management and Law; Health and Social Care; Humanities; Lifelong Learning and Social Science.

There are 15,000 students from all over the World, but almost a quarter come from within 30 miles of the University. Most (more than 7,500) are studying for first degrees (97% from State schools), 3,500 are nursing and midwifery students and approximately 3,000 are at postgraduate or research level.

The University is a registered charity, serving the community, and its annual income is more than £70 million. In addition to occupying some of Chester's most historic locations, over the past three years alone it has spent more than £25 million on new and refurbished buildings at its campuses in Parkgate Road Chester and Crab Lane, Warrington, such as a purpose-built Business and IT Centre, state-of-the-art Library and Learning Resources Centre, a hi-tech Arts and Media site and Students' Union facilities. The Academy enables it to invest further in excellence in education, for the benefit of Ellesmere Port.
