Job overview

The School

The Nelson-Mandela-School (secondary school) is the first Berlin state international school that was founded in the year 2000, as a bilingual and multicultural, German- International public school. It leads to the recognized IB Diploma as well as to the German Abitur.

The school serves 1400 students in 3 buildings. The elementary school is made up of grades 1 through 6 and the high school contains grades 7 through 13. The student body is comprised of students with 45 % German and 55 % with international background representing more than 60 different nationalities. The school has an international faculty of more than 170 teachers from more than 16 different countries. The elementary and the secondary school have a German principal each as well as a corresponding assistant principal. The elementary school ranks among one of the most prestigious in Berlin with three sections of each grade level, grade 1 through grade 6. The secondary school works with five sections of each grade level, grade 7 through grade 10. In upper secondary (grade 11 through grade 13), the school prepares approximately 360 students in courses for an IB diploma or Abitur.

The second Berlin state international school, named Wangari-Maathai-School, was founded in 2018 and is still connected to the Nelson-Mandela-School.

The new Nelson-Mandela-School principal will therefore also be responsible for supporting and monitoring the development of this school. In the current school year 2018/2019, the Wangari-Maathai-School is made up of grades 1 and 2 with two sections of each level. A new administrative structure for this school is currently being developed. The new principal will be part of this process.

Curriculum

The school provides an academically challenging curriculum that combines features of International and German educational systems. It also provides enough flexibility to meet the needs of individual students The Nelson-Mandela-School offers unique opportunities for a child’s early exposure and contact to the corresponding partner cultures and language. Teaching languages are German and English, with a slight stronger emphasis on English because of the prevailing German-language environment surrounding the students. All students are assigned a Mother Tongue and a Partner Tongue, which define their language arts program during the school day.

An extensive variety of extracurricular after school activities is offered for students in all grades.

The city of Berlin offers unsurpassed cultural and recreational opportunities, making it one of the most vibrant and livable capitals in the world.
