College Central

Principal

(Cross-County)

Full-time, Permanent

Leadership pay range

L22 £70,745 to L28 £81,942 p.a.

College Central is the Countywide Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in East Sussex, which is spread across a number of sites. College Central offers alternative provision to all statutory school age pupils who are either permanently excluded or at risk of permanent exclusion in East Sussex.  With an average class size of eight pupils, College Central encourages and builds positive relationships between staff and students.

College Central is part of The SABDEN Multi Academy Trust, which provides specialist education in East Sussex to young people with complex behaviours related to Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. In addition to College Central, the Trust consists of three SEMH special schools, a new vocational alternative provision free school, and a school within a secure facility. The Trust is in the pre-opening phase of opening a new SEMH Free School on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. SABDEN is a supportive employer committed to creating a warm, caring, stable, supportive environment in which staff and pupils feel safe.

College Central was graded as ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2018 and the Trust is seeking to appoint a highly aspirational and ambitious Principal who will develop, innovate and lead College Central towards become an ‘Outstanding’ PRU with redefined principles, vision and purpose for years to come.

The appointment of Principal at College Central within the Trust comes at an exciting time of significant change with the appointment of a new SABDEN CEO and at a time of an internal review of College Central. The Principal will play in integral role in this review, analysing evidence including data already gathered in order to clarify the ongoing needs and composition of the pupil cohort catered for, develop an appropriate and outstanding curriculum and ensure the efficacy of provision.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute, shape and lead College Central into its next phase, fully supported by the Trust Executive Leadership Team.

The Principal of College Central will have whole school responsibility for the operational development of provision post review. They will work closely with the Trust and external stakeholders, including mainstream school leaders and the Local Authority. The Principal will support and continue to develop a dedicated staff team, providing inspirational, motivational and professional leadership. They will be expected to demonstrate that they understand the needs of the expected cohort and the potential safeguarding vulnerabilities.

The Trust is seeking to appoint an innovative, dedicated and highly aspirational Principal who will successfully lead the school through a period of transformational change to ensure the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the PRU service in East Sussex.

The successful candidate will have high expectations and will set aspirational targets for attendance, attainment and behaviour. They will have the ability to manage diverse relationships with stakeholders, including mainstream schools and the local authority, underpinned by excellent communication skills. They will be able to confidently analyse information and to act upon, both internal and national data and to critically evaluate the provision and develop it accordingly.

The successful candidate will have the ability to create and maintain a supportive and consistent culture within the school and further develop a culture in which pupils and staff feel valued and safe. They will be committed to outstanding curriculum development to ensure the needs of a diverse cohort are fully met. The ability to demonstrate exceptional organisational and communication skills that will ensure that the school is run smoothly, efficiently and effectively is essential. The new Principal will be solution focused, responsive and resilient. They will be committed to delivering high quality education and securing outstanding outcomes for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the county.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of outstanding teaching, leadership & management experience within a school or PRU setting.

They will be accountable to The SABDEN Multi Academy Trust working closely under the guidance and support of the CEO and Executive Leadership Team.
