Cross River State is a coastal state in southeastern Nigeria, bordering Cameroon to the east. Its capital is at Calabar and it is named for the Cross River (Oyono), which passes through the state. Ejagham and Efik are major languages of this state, but the Igbo tribe and language are also present in its western land borders. Cross River State is a coastal state in South Eastern Nigeria, named after the Cross River, which passes through the state. Located in the Niger Delta, Cross River State occupies 20,156 square kilometers. It shares boundaries with Benue State to the north, Enugu and Abia States to the west, to the east by Cameroon Republic and to the south by Akwa-Ibom and the Atlantic Ocean. Calabar is the capital of Cross River State, and has often been described as the tourism capital of Nigeria.

About the School

SIS is a private co-educational international day and boarding school located in Calabar, Cross River, Nigeria. The school offers education for children of different nationalities from early years to year 11 and is built on Christian foundations. The school implements an integrated Nigerian and British curriculum.

Job Description

The Principal is the Head of School and is expected to provide leadership in pursuing the mission of SIS within the framework of Board policy. The Principal is the prime mover in creating, inspiring and embodying the Christian ethos and culture of SIS, securing its Mission statement with all members of the school community and ensuring an environment for teaching and learning that empowers both staff and students to achieve their highest potential. Thus, the core purpose of the Principal is to provide professional leadership and management for the school within the context of the School Development Plan (SDP) – to be developed by the Principal and approved by the Board. This will promote a secure foundation from which to achieve high standards in all areas of the school’s work. To gain this success the Principal must establish high quality education by effectively managing teaching and learning and using personalised learning to realise the potential of all students. The Principal must establish a culture that promotes excellence, equality and high expectations of all students within a strong Christian ethos.

The Principal is the leading professional in the school. Accountable to the Board, the Principal provides vision, leadership and direction for the school and ensures that it is managed and organised to meet its aims and targets. The Principal, working with others, is responsible for evaluating the school’s performance to identify the priorities for continuous improvement and raising standards; ensuring equality of opportunity for all; developing policies and practices; ensuring that resources are efficiently and effectively used to achieve the school’s aims in accordance with its mission statement, and for the day-to-day management, organisation and administration of the school.

Drawing on the support provided by members of the school's church and wider communities, the Principal is responsible for creating a productive learning environment which is engaging and fulfilling for all students.

The Principal will have oversight of the early years, primary and secondary sections of the school.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications 

  1. Preference is for an educator with teaching experience in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
  2. Extensive administrative and teaching experience in an African and/or British curriculum programme.
  3. Extensive experience as a Principal, preferably in an international boarding school.
  4. A minimum of 5 years’ headship experience.
  5. Knowledgeable about the pastoral/tutorial system in England.
  6. An advanced professional degree with current National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), Education Doctorate, Master’s degree in Education or equivalent.
