Job overview

Are you ready to lead us on our mission ‘To be the best we can be’?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Principal to lead Caedmon College on its way to outstanding.

Caedmon College is located in the historic coastal town of Whitby, surrounded by the beautiful North York Moors National Park. The College sits on two sites with extensive grounds and has outstanding sports facilities.

The recent restructuring of secondary education in Whitby has provided Caedmon College with an opportunity to further develop our working partnership with Eskdale School (the other 11-16 year secondary provider in Whitby) and to continue our excellent work with local primaries.

To ensure the future of a strong and successful educational provision in the town, it is imperative that you maintain and develop networks, partnerships and collaborations with the local and wider school community. With an outward mind-set you will strengthen existing partnerships and develop new ones so as to provide the very best offer and outcomes for young people in our community.

Caedmon has an established Post 16 provision, which was praised highly in a recent Ofsted inspection. In order to ensure its continuing success, the Principal needs to engage in and understand the needs of the local community and to develop an appropriate provision that secures a strong Sixth Form for the future.

Caedmon College is a leading school within Whole Education and has a well-established SAIL curriculum in KS3. This promotes well our mission “to be the best we can be” through excellence, friendship and respect. We believe passionately that education can transform the lives of all who are educated here, whatever their ability or circumstance.

A strong leader, team builder and communicator, you will also have the skills and ability to effectively manage your time, to ensure that staff are supported, developed and integrated effectively into the wider team.

We will offer you;

  • The opportunity to work in a good school with a highly effective Sixth Form;
  • The chance to work within a school that is open to, and implements innovative ways of teaching and learning;
  • A strong culture of professional development for all staff;
  • A supportive governing body which is committed to further developing you as a leader;
  • A local authority which provides newly appointed headteachers with a strong induction and support programme;
  • Students who are purposeful and ready to learn and who will make you proud to be a teaching professional.

Caedmon College Whitby is an 11-19 community college which has a wide and varied curriculum at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Post-16, also offering courses for adult learners.

We collaborate with many local providers to give the best education we possibly can for our young people. We have, in September 2014, enlarged the College through an amalgamation with Caedmon School in Whitby. The College also works in close partnership with a range of other organisations. In particular, we are partners with Yorkshire Coast College, Malton Hair Academy, Redcar and

Cleveland College and the Adult Education Service, which offers a wide range of provision for adults and young people. The College is also a member of two Teaching School Alliances; Wakefield City Academy/Leeds Metropolitan University and the Esk Valley partnership.

The College strives for continuous improvement, aiming to bring leading edge teaching and learning to one of the most beautiful and historic places in the country.

Our mission: ‘To be the best we can be’

Our aims: to enable our students to develop a real passion for 21st Century learning and work, through engaging teaching and learning in a safe environment. We will facilitate learning which our students and community value and which brings out the best in them. We will motivate students to succeed both now and in the future, allowing them to achieve their best. To do this, we will offer the best possible opportunities for personal development and optimism for adult life.

This is what we believe in: Excellence, Friendship, Respect

All members of the College community have a duty to develop themselves, and encourage in others in the wider community the positive strengths and values society shares.

Leadership at Caedmon College will:

  • Develop, with stakeholders, a clear vision and common purpose that inspires confidence, motivation and ultimately success for all.
  • Be enthusiastic, optimistic, ambitious and realistic: working with humility and stewardship
  • Ensure joint ownership and responsibility for driving the College towards outstanding/excellence where the talents of all are respected and valued
  • Be visible and pro-active with shared commitment and harmony
  • Be built on trust, effective communication and support

The College had a full Ofsted inspection in February 2017 and yet again we were  judged to be good in all areas. We have much to be proud of in the College: wonderful young people with huge potential; a very hardworking and friendly staff and a team of people committed to bringing about rapid improvement through best practice in teaching and learning.

Are you the special sort of person who can see the tremendous potential of our students, and join the team seeking to make a real difference?

All potential candidates are welcome to contact the College to discuss the post advertised in advance of submitting an application.
