Job overview

Henshaws College is an ambitious and inclusive specialist college for young people, aged 16-25 with 90 on roll on both day and residential placements. The students have a range of complex medical, emotional, or behavioural challenges. Historically it was a college for visual impairments and around a third of the students have this need. Trustees are now recruiting for a new Principal who will provide the strategic and inspirational leadership that will create a culture of constant improvement so that the College can provide an outstanding education for all of its students. It is important that the new Principal has experience of successful leadership in a setting for special needs but previous experience in an FE setting is not essential.

Henshaws College provides individual study programmes designed around student’s needs. Whether it is preparing for employment, making friends or learning to live more independently, the focus is on enabling students to make their aspirations possible and goals a reality. 100% of the students’ progress positively to their preferred type of destination after graduating.

The College’s greatest asset is its talented and committed team of staff. Their focus is on providing consistently high quality teaching and learning where all students are challenged to achieve their potential and where everyone makes the best progress at all times. The College has responded to recent inspections by further strengthening the team with appointments being made to a number of high level specialist roles including a new Head of Care, as well as clinical and residential care specialist leaders to support the vision going forward. The College governing body has also been strengthened.  This team will provide the strong foundation for future success.

The College has a reputation for exceeding expectations which has resulted in student numbers increasing year on year, and it is now close to capacity. The new Principal must be committed to developing, leading and inspiring the highest levels of achievement in every aspect of the College’s work. This will require a combination of visible, hands on operational leadership to drive quality in all areas alongside the ability to be outward facing communicating and engaging effectively with a range of partners and stakeholders.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a forward thinking and caring College. Candidates must have a record of outstanding leadership at a senior level in an SEN school or college. You must share the College’s ambition and model it in your daily practice and leadership to inspire and engage students and staff. You must also be a compassionate leader who can hold staff to account whilst being accountable yourself. Above all, you will share the passion and belief that young people, their learning and developing their potential are at the heart of all decisions.

Henshaws is a specialist charity providing expert support, advice and training to anyone affected by sight loss. We also work with people with other disabilities, and because sight loss and disability affects family, friends and colleagues, we work with them too.

Henshaws is one of the oldest charities in the UK, opening in Manchester in 1837. Throughout our 175 year history we’ve built a reputation for trust and expertise. We now work throughout the north of England, with centres and communities in Harrogate, Knaresborough, Manchester, Merseyside and Newcastle. We help hundreds of visually impaired and disabled people each year to develop the skills and independence they need to lead lives that are as full and independent as possible.

Henshaws College in Harrogate is our independent specialist college for students aged 16-25. The College supports students with learning difficulties and physical disabilities, with a specialism in visual impairment.

The College mission is to empower students with skills and confidence to maximise their independence and employability, minimise the effects of their disability and achieve success through their transition to adult life. We treat everyone with dignity and respect, celebrating all contributions and achievements and striving to improve our service through change and innovation.
