Job overview

Formerly Outwood Grange College of Technology, Outwood Grange Academy opened its doors in September 2009 as an Academy of Excellence and the inspiration behind Outwood Grange Academies Trust. A National Training school for eleven years and one of the country’s first Teaching Schools, Outwood Grange Academy is a model school and a benchmark against which other academies’ progress can be judged.

In its last Ofsted inspection, the Academy was found to be, yet again, Outstanding in all areas: overall effectiveness, achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety, and leadership and management. As the inspectors put it: “The drive for the Academy’s success comes from the outstanding work of its leaders.”

The report went on to note that “the excellent behaviour of students contributes to an outstanding climate for learning”, “students’ achievement is outstanding” and “the overwhelming majority of students are successful in going on to education, employment or training after they leave the Academy”.

However, we are anything but complacent, and have continued to make huge strides forward. In 2017, 84.5% of our students achieved 4+ in both English and Maths.

Put simply, our motto is “Students First”. We put students at the heart of everything we do by raising standards and transforming lives. We believe that the whole point of schools is to put children first, and everything we do reflects this goal. If you share our view, we invite you to join us on our journey.

As an existing or aspiring Principal, you will have a track record of improving performance, driving change and raising standards and aspirations for every member of a school community. You will need the tenacity and integrity to deliver in challenging circumstances and the ability to communicate a vision that inspires, motivates and enthuses staff, students and the community as a whole. Previous experience of managing change and working collaboratively to deliver school improvement will be advantageous.

We will offer a high level of continuous professional development, including an in-depth understanding of the Outwood School Transformation Model, access to one of the country’s largest school improvement teams and the opportunity to shape not only the educational provision within Outwood Grange Academy, but also across the wider trust.

The successful candidate will be required to work in any of the schools/academies within the Outwood Grange Family of Schools as directed by the Chief Executive Officer, however in the first instance this position is advertised for Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield.

The Outwood Grange Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments will be subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS disclosure.

Closing date: Friday, 20 April 2018

Please note interviews will take place on Tuesday 24th April and Wednesday 25th April 2018

Interim Chief Executive Officer - Lee Wilson

Principal: Andrew Downing

We are an Outstanding rated, 11-18 academy based in the cathedral city of Wakefield, near Leeds.

The Outwood Family was born out of our academy’s success and we are proud that after our last inspection, Ofsted paid tribute to the ‘academy staff and leaders for the way they ensure you get the best education possible.’

We have nurtured a school community that is welcoming and friendly, where students and staff can make excellent progress together, with a focus on creating a culture of success, a positive climate for learning, and increased attainment, achievement and social and emotional development.

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

If you share our vision, join our family.
