Job overview

Student

The boy hails from a kind, friendly family with a wide range of interests and an open, welcoming nature.  The boy is engaging and has a mischievous sense of humour.  He is intelligent, motivated and keen to learn.  He has a passion for medieval history and a delightfully inquisitive nature.

Like any 10-year-old, he enjoys sport.  He plays rugby and adores football.  He is gregarious, funny, bright and interested in the world around him.  He enjoys mechanics and engineering projects and toys such as Lego and Fischer Technic.

The boy currently attends school in Uruguay that follows the British education model, which suits his learning style.  For the last two years, he has been working successfully with a Tutor from Tutors International. His grades are high, and he has shown himself to be a capable, engaged student.  His tutored lessons have been very creative and inspiring – the Tutor and boy have been anything but desk-bound.

The family will move to Montreal in time for spring when the boy will start his new school.  As there is a change in both language and curricula, the family would like to make the transition as smooth as possible for him and would like a Tutor to help guide the boy over the first six months.

Role of the Tutor

The boy’s parents understand education theory and are familiar with a range of education systems including project-based learning, world learning and both British and American curricula.  Having found a Tutor in Uruguay who helped ignite a love of learning for its own sake in their son, they are looking for someone similar with a specialism in the Canadian education system and with French language.  The family would like to extend their son’s interests beyond the classroom, broaden his horizons and ensure that his academic foundations are solid.

In Uruguay, the Tutor’s role involved a range of project-based learning experiences.  This kind of learning will be encouraged in Montreal, though it is recognised that the language element of this role may require a more formal approach to tuition.  Either way the Tutor should use their skills and imagination to bring alive projects in such a way that the boy does not realise he is learning.

The family has several properties across the Americas, and the Tutor will also travel between the houses.  When away from Montreal, the Tutor will be responsible for the boy’s education, and should ensure that he works on the same material as his peers in Canada to minimise disruption on his return.

The Tutor must have a sense of adventure and a can-do attitude.  They must be either fluent or very strong in French. Good Spanish would also be advantageous.

The family is looking for the right Tutor to fit with their lifestyle, not just with the boy’s education needs.  The Tutor should be prepared to get involved with the family, and should be happy to join them for meals and conversations.  The Tutor will likely spend time on the family farms, and should be comfortable around animals.

This position requires an energetic and interesting teacher who has experience working with bright children of primary age and beyond. The Tutor will develop an educationally rich program of study which allows for project-based learning, and bridges the gaps between British and Canadian education.  They should develop a broad curricula without increasing the depth of subject knowledge beyond what is age appropriate.  This balance can be found by extending the subjects and skills covered to include things like photography, astronomy, cooking, knots and first aid.  A Tutor with a background in engineering will be at an advantage.

The Tutor must be organized, self-reliant, and independent.  They should be eloquent, able to explain concepts simply, and to inspire with their enthusiasm for any subject.  He or she will have a kind and caring disposition, and a firm-but-fair approach to their work.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor will work for an average of 35 hours a week with preparation time in addition.  The timetable must fit around extracurricular activities and any travel planned by the family, and should be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected changes.

The Tutor is entitled to two consecutive days off per week but should not expect these to occur at weekends or be regular in their timing.  The standard 9 weeks (45 working days) of paid vacation allowance (pro-rated) applies to this contract, with breaks being taken at times convenient to the Client.

Accommodation and travel

There will be a furnished apartment near the family home in Montreal.  The rent, utilities and Internet on this apartment will be paid for by the Client.

When travelling, accommodation will vary from living-in with the family in a rented house, to the Tutor having their own hotel room.  The Client is mindful that the Tutor is a professional and should have appropriate privacy as far as possible.

A car is available in Montreal.  In other locations, the Tutor will be reimbursed for all local public transport and any travel costs incurred while travelling with the family or be given the use of a car if need be.

They will be fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
