Job overview

Four students, key stage 3 to A-level

A qualified and experienced teacher is required to join a team of three Tutors teaching four children aged 8-17. A science & maths specialist, and a humanities specialist teach the older two children. The two younger children are taught by a primary specialist. This new role is to teach all children French and also to become the replacement humanities teacher from September 2017, when the current Tutor will be leaving.

The position is based mainly in Europe with frequent travel to the family’s homes. The job starts as soon as possible, with the latest start date being September 2017. An earlier start date would be advantageous to enable overlap with the existing tutor. The initial contract will run until the end of August 2018. The position will then be renewable annually by mutual agreement between all parties.

Students

From September 2016, the children will be in the equivalent of year 4, year 6, year 11 and year 13. They are generally ahead of the levels that would be expected for these school years. All of the children have full extra-curricular schedules, including dancing, drama, tennis, skiing and many other activities. They are all well-mannered, pleasant, and interesting, with a good work ethic and an appetite for learning.

The oldest boy is in his final year of home schooling. He has achieved excellent results in both his IGCSE’s and AS’s. He took 5 subjects this summer at AS level; History, Classical Civilisation, French, Maths, and Further Maths, which he has now dropped to concentrate on achieving excellent results in his other four subjects. He will apply to Cambridge to read History in September 2018.

The oldest girl is currently in Year 11. She has taken 6 IGCSEs already and is planning to take another 5 IGCSEs this year as well as AS Latin. Although she has taken her IGCSE French already her intention is currently that she will study it to A level. Her A level choices are not fixed yet, but are potentially going to be English, French, Maths and Geography.

The younger girl is in her final year of primary education. She has been studying a broad primary curriculum, based around individual numeracy and literacy lessons and differentiated joint topics work with her younger brother. Both the younger children have been having introductory lessons for Latin and French. The girl will soon be starting the transition process to a middle school curriculum, so would benefit from being taught more frequently in separate subjects. The youngest boy has entered year 4 this year. He routinely works at a much higher level than his age suggests, particularly in mathematics. He has had the same structure to his school time as his sister.

Role of the Tutor

The principal role of the Tutor will be to teach French and English literature to A Level. They must also be able to teach French and ideally another language to Key Stage 3 level, plus the other Humanities subjects; English Literature, English Language, and History. This is effectively to replace the responsibilities of the current Humanities teacher, who will be leaving at the end of her contract in August 2017. She will have held this position for 5 years by this stage and wishes to pursue her other interests.

The Tutor must have experience teaching French to A level. They must have excellent spoken French, and must be confident in their ability to teach this aspect of the subject to the highest level. They must also be comfortable with teaching French to the younger students.

Ideally, the Tutor will also be able to teach other interests such as art, or music. The appointed candidate will be highly educated, intelligent, well-travelled, responsible, practical, and down-to- earth with a sense of fun and a wide range of personal interests they can bring to the role. The ideal Tutor will be physically fit and active. The children will respond best to a young, positive, friendly and enthusiastic person who can fit in with the existing tutors to provide a broad education.

The ideal applicant will be a qualified teacher, with plenty of experience, enthusiasm and energy. They will need to design and deliver courses that solidify the children’s schooling to date and that progress them as quickly as the best schools, but without being pressuring or overbearing. It will be essential for the Tutor to maintain meticulous records of achievement for all the children and across all their subjects. There are well-equipped schoolrooms in all locations; the Tutors are responsible for ensuring that they remain organised and well stocked, and for packing and moving any teaching materials they wish to take between the locations. Travel plans are subject to change at short notice, so the Tutor must be flexible and able to cope with changing arrangements.

Hours and Holidays, Accommodation, Transport and Miscellaneous

This is a full time position and, as far as possible, will need to follow a carefully planned timetable. The Tutor should expect to work around 40 hours per week with preparation in addition. The Tutors will be entitled to an average of two consecutive days off per week, but may need to be flexible regarding the family’s travel plans and the children’s other activities. The Tutor will be entitled to a minimum of 9 weeks (45 days) holiday per year. This will be taken at times agreed with the Client.

This position should not be viewed as a ‘9 to 5’ job as all of the tutors live in shared accommodation and there is by necessity a certain amount of co-operation and teamwork needed outside the school day as well as during. A willingness to help out with transporting children to after school events from time to time is expected.

The family has homes across Europe, and travel frequently between them and also further afield. This role is not suitable for applicants with an accompanying partner. The Tutor should be a non-smoker, physically fit, imaginative and inventive. They must be a confident driver. A willingness to participate in extra-curricular activities, to be a good role model for the children and a pleasant companion for the whole family and to be able to create a good relationship with the other tutors is required.
