Job overview

Are you an ambitious and experienced education professional with experience of strategic leadership of literacy? Do you have the vision and passion to lead our work on secondary school improvement through programme delivery and training?

We work with secondary schools to improve support for literacy and ensure it is recognised as the vital skill set that underpins all areas of teaching and learning. Our Literacy for Life programme puts literacy at the heart of secondary school improvement, developing pupils’ subject specific vocabulary and ability to communicate effectively in all subjects. Following a successful pilot, we have secured funding to increase the number of schools taking part in direct programme delivery, and engage even more schools with training developed through the programme.

We are looking for an ambitious and experienced education professional to lead Literacy for Life, positioning it as the foremost national programme for raising literacy levels in secondary education. This will include managing all aspects of programme development and delivery, meeting targets for the number of schools engaged in training and working with colleagues to ensure the programme has a sustainable business model. You will lead a team of four, including two consultants based around the country.

You will need an outstanding track record as an education professional and an extensive understanding of secondary school leadership and literacy pedagogy. Experience of delivering education programmes in a charity or public sector context would be an advantage.

This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative programme delivery to transform support for literacy in secondary schools.

One person in six has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood of literacy failure by the age of five.

We are an independent charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. Our research and analysis make us the leading authority on literacy. We run projects in the poorest communities, campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and parents, and support schools. Our mission is to give young people the literacy skills they need to get a job and lead a successful life.

As well as a competitive salary, we offer benefits including a generous annual leave allowance of 28 days (plus bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and new year), and pensions contributions of 8% of annual salary.

This role is based in London, SW8.

Closing date: 10am on Monday 15 April 2019.

Job Function: Charity & Voluntary

Industry Sector: Charity & Not-for-Profit

Part or full time, flexible, up to 35 hours per week

Fixed-term contract for two years

Job ref: HKSAT1504/JH-SH-CC

Registered charity no. 1116260 (England and Wales) and SC042944 (Scotland).
