Description The Director of Schools invites applications from suitably qualified and energetic people for the position of Project Officer, Newcastle Catholic Schools Trade Training Centre, Yula-Punaal Education and Healing Aboriginal Corporation campus at Mandalong. A 0.4 FTE role, the Project Officer will provide assistance and support to Aboriginal students enrolled in Catholic schools and parents to improve access training, employment and assistance in the workplace.



The purpose of this position is twofold:


• Provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders students who are disengaged from school and quality learning. This initiative stems from the Aboriginal community and clan groups within the Maitland Newcastle Diocese and families of Aboriginal students within our Catholic Schools. The Aboriginal community envisioned an alternative learning and cultural solution that will address the retention and disengagement of students.


• Encourage Aboriginal community participation and involvement in the Trading Training Centre Program with Year 11 and 12 students engaging in attainment of VET competencies. As a part of this Trade Training Centre program, the Project Officer will also provide assistance and support to Aboriginal students and parents to improve access to training, employment and assistance in the workplace.



Role Description


• The Project Officer will work initially with students from St Paul’s HS Booragul, St Mary’s HS Gateshead, St Francis Xavier HS Hamilton and San Clemente HS Mayfield who have an interest in Aboriginal culture, land management and environmental sustainability.


• In collaboration with Careers Advisors in each of the cluster schools, the Project Officer will liaise with Training Services NSW, TAFE and other training organisations and industry to access and oversee training opportunities for Aboriginal students.


• In collaboration with Careers Advisors in each of the cluster schools, the Project Officer will promote and support apprenticeship and traineeship pathways for Aboriginal students.


• The Project Officer will liaise with Yula-Punaal Trade Training Centre, CSO Aboriginal Education Officer, CSO VET Officer, school principals, Aboriginal Education Teachers and Workers in each school.


• The Project Officer will coordinate the successful implementation of training courses in each semester of the school year.


• The Project Officer will work with cluster schools to identify students at risk of disengagement with education, and to deliver culturally appropriate programs to promote engagement and attainment of educational outcomes.


• The Project Officer will be responsible to the Director of Schools through the Assistant Director for this project.
Position Requirements The position requires the successful candidate to:


• be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (This is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under section 14 (d) of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act, 1977. In order to ensure this qualification is considered a corroborated Conformation of Aboriginality must be submitted with the application);


• have a sound understanding and appreciation of the ethos and context of Catholic schools;


• have a sound understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal History and an awareness of Aboriginal cultural, identity, Aboriginal spirituality and kinship practises;


• have experience and expertise working in educational settings with a focus on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students;


• have established and ongoing links with the local and/or wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community;


• have an interest in and experience in delivering courses related to land management and environmental sustainability;


• have a broad understanding of VET requirements for students in Stage 6;


• in collaboration with Careers Advisors from the cluster schools, have the confidence and capacity to provide advice to schools, parents and students regarding training pathways and appropriate careers;


• have the ability to relate positively to local Aboriginal networks, principals, teachers and work colleagues;


• use initiative, work in a team setting or unsupervised as required, and be flexible in working style;


• demonstrate good organisational, communication, literacy, numeracy and ICT skills;


• willingness to fulfil the requirements of the CSO Accreditation to Work Teach and Lead Policy.
Essential Criteria • Be appropriately qualified as a 4 year trained teacher;

• Completion of Anaphylaxis training;

• Qualifications and/or experience (see below) relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and/or cultural settings. This is inclusive of being able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and contemporary educational issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;

• Successful applicants must have current accreditation to teach with NESA, which includes successful clearances in regards to Working with Children and Criminal background checks.
Desirable Criteria • Holds Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management (AHC21016).

• Holds a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116).

• Current Senior First Aid Certificate.

• Current unrestricted Class C Driver’s Licence and own car.

• Current small bus Licence.

Conditions of EmploymentThe position attracts a pro-rata allowance at the level of Coordinator 2. Salary is in accordance with New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory Catholic Systemic Schools Enterprise Agreement 2017.
