Job overview

About OAT:

Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT) is a not-for-profit sponsor of over 40 schools – currently 32 secondary schools, six primary schools, four alternative provision schools and one special school. Our vision is for all young people to have access to the highest academic, social and practical skills required to achieve their full potential, whether going on to study at a leading university or entering the world of work. We are determined to become the Trust that makes the biggest difference, both inside and outside the classroom.

Our successful family of schools educates over 30,000 students across many areas of the country. We are continuing to improve outcomes for our students despite being largely in areas of historic academic under-achievement.

About the job:

We are looking to recruit an outstanding teacher to work as a Lead Practitioner for Science to work across the north and west regions of our trust.

The support you offer our leaders and teachers will be vital in ensuring that all our schools achieve the same successes.  Joining a school improvement team led by a National Director, you will use your passion, subject knowledge and expertise in science to drive forward the quality of the curriculum and teaching and learning. The role is two-fold. You will contribute to the development of a curriculum of the highest quality for our academies and you will coach and develop science teachers and leaders in your area of the country. Alongside this core role, you will model great practice through a partial teaching timetable in a school within 20 miles of your home (your base school). This in an exciting role that requires flexibility, a team spirit, and a willingness to learn and it will suit individuals who want to take a step-up and work at a more strategic level in science, across a range of schools.

About you:

Our expectations are high.  We want OAT to be nationally renowned for excellence in science. We are aiming to ensure that all our schools show strong progress in the subject so that students can progress onto further study, university or employment of their choice.

The successful candidate will:

  • be an outstanding teacher with a proven track record of securing sustained excellent outcomes.
  • have up-to-date knowledge of science curriculum and assessment requirements.
  • have a keen interest in learning more about teaching science and developing quality materials and curriculum resources.
  • be proficient in teaching science to A Level.
  • have proven experience of identifying and implementing effective strategies for improving attainment in science in challenging schools at KS3 and KS4.
  • have an interest in Primary delivery and curriculum.
  • have a highly effective style that is both consultative and influential.
  • be able to demonstrate resilience, motivation and commitment to driving up standards of achievement.
  • be able to work across a group of schools and show significant impact in developing capacity and improving outcomes for young people.

Regular travel across our academies is a requirement of the job. Travel and subsistence expenses from your base location will be met.

In return, we offer great career prospects in a supportive environment, commitment to your continued professional development, pension, health cash plan and other generous staff discounts.

To apply, please submit your completed application and supporting statement by 12 noon on Wednesday 6th October. Interviews will be 13/14 October.

For an informal discussion about the role, or if you have any additional queries, please contact the Senior Lead Practitioner for Science at simon.shanks@ormistonacademies.co.uk

OAT is committed to safeguarding children; successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

About Ormiston Academies Trust

With over 40 schools – currently 32 secondary schools, six primary schools, three alternative provision schools and one special school across five OAT regions, the trust is one of the largest and longest standing trusts in the school system and is guided by our founder, Peter Murray’s belief that every child deserves the chance to thrive.

We provide pupils with the best learning opportunities in every classroom, in every school, every day. We are also committed to the learning and development that takes place outside of the classroom, and the enriching role that schools and education play in children’s lives.

Our schools are located across a diverse range of communities, each with its own unique character, strengths and challenges. OAT believes in the power of collaboration and working as one team across our schools. This collective approach is underpinned by our core values, which sit at the heart of the work across the trust. It is only through a culture of cohesion and shared endeavour, that we will deliver more for children and families.

There is much to be proud of at OAT, but the trust is not complacent and is committed to improving everything it does. Everyone who works at OAT plays a key role in our journey to both develop and deliver our strategy over the next five years.

We look for people who share our belief in the power of education to change lives for young people, and who have the intellectual, interpersonal and operational capabilities required every day to improve education at scale in a national organisation.
