Job overview

More House is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to join the Religious Studies Department and to make a significant contribution to the Catholic ethos at our school. We seek to appoint an enthusiastic teacher with a real passion for Religious Studies who is committed to the success of the pupils and is highly motivated to develop the teaching and learning across the department. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of excellent teaching and demonstrate the potential to lead.

The Religious Studies Department at More House is at the heart of School life. As well as being a leading department in terms of academic results, the department is deeply immersed in the liturgical life of the School and in social justice activities such as Faith In Action. We pride ourselves on our behaviour record and positive relationships. Ultimately, pupils love their Religious Studies lessons.

At Key Stage 3, the curriculum is varied, engaging and very well resourced. At Key Stage 4 all pupils undertake the GCSE, under exam board AQA specification B. At A Level we offer Philosophy, Theology and Ethics under exam board Eduqas. All pupils undertake Sixth Form Core R.S. and enjoy the modules they examine. Last year’s GCSE results were 39% 9-7 and 100 % 9-4 and we seek to build on this success going forward.

We have a vibrant and diverse extra-curricular programme at More House and the pupils love this aspect of School life. The Religious Studies Department recently hosted an evening with popular BBC presenter, Andrew Graham Dixon, who examined faith through the art work of Caravaggio. Additionally, we are involved in a variety of trips and activities such as visits to Tuscany where the School choir sang in the Duomo in Florence. We also sang in the Oratory of the Co-Cathedral of St. John in Valetta and were due to sing at the Confirmation ceremony in Westminster Cathedral earlier this month but sadly the event was postponed.

We have weekly Mass led by our visiting priest. Weekly prayers are emailed to the pupils and staff. These examine the weekly Gospel and a relevant modern issue.  We have an incredible focus on charity work at More House School and support SVP, the Cardinal Hume Centre, Fairtrade Fortnight and Passage to name but a few. The pupils take the lead on the various charitable endeavours they would like to support through the Faith In Action programme and they are able to articulate why they wish to help those less fortunate.

This is a great department to work in and we look forward to welcoming someone who is as energetic and passionate as we are.

This is a part time post (0.4 FTE Monday and Tuesday)

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About More House School

About the School

More House is an independent Catholic day school for girls aged 11 to 18, founded in 1953 by the Canonesses of St Augustine. In 1971, the School moved to its present home in Knightsbridge, where it is now managed by a lay charitable trust.

Proud of its Catholic foundations and ethos, the School welcomes girls of all faiths, to whom it provides a first-class education in a nurturing environment proudly presented as 'a greenhouse not a hothouse'. Class sizes are small: around 16 girls.

Personal and social development, intellectual curiosity and creativity are enriched through a wide-ranging co-curricular programme that takes full advantage of the School’s central London location.

Values and vision

More House aims to achieve the highest academic performance whilst nurturing the personal development of each pupil.

With an inclusive ethos and family atmosphere, the School is committed to delivering the best possible learning environment for all pupils through a culture of excellence that permeates every classroom and department. Relationships between pupils and staff are strong.

The focus for each pupil is not simply on achieving the best grade, but on delivering the best possible educational experience and creating a lifelong passion for learning. The School’s size means it is small enough to meet the learning needs of each individual but large enough to challenge each individual and provide a wealth of opportunities – academic, sporting, musical, artistic, social and more.

The School aims to:

  • Cultivate inspiring and successful young women by fostering Commitment, Integrity and Compassion.
  • Promote an ethos of spiritual development, humility and self–awareness, founded on the Catholic faith but relevant to those who adhere to other faiths and beliefs.
  • Engender a culture of intellectual curiosity both inside and outside of the classroom and pride in individual and collective achievement.
  • Provide for the social and emotional wellbeing and development of pupils and staff through tolerance, justice and openness in an environment where all are equally valued and where individual rights and dignity are respected.
  • Embrace the philosophy of Global Citizenship by developing an awareness and understanding of whole world sensitivities and the importance of living sustainably.

More House is also committed to maintaining a high level of expertise in its staff through succession planning and staff development.
