Job overview

Research Fellow

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) is one of the world’s leading educational research and development organisations. Originally established in Australia as an independent, not-for-profit organisation, ACER now has offices in India, Indonesia, UAE and the UK.

An exciting opportunity has arisen at ACER UK for a researcher specialising in test development for English / literacy assessments. The successful applicant will use their experience of school-based education within the UK to lead on key aspects of test development projects for various clients. The major part of the role will involve developing assessment and reporting materials. There is also the possibility of undertaking related work such as curriculum and assessment evaluations, the development of curriculum resource materials and delivering professional development to teachers.

Experience of teaching – at primary or secondary school level – and a post graduate degree (or equivalent) are highly desirable. Previous experience of assessment, possibly gained through development of test materials or marking of assessments at a national level, is also desired. Candidates must have a strong interest in English / literacy education and in assessment in those areas; knowledge of how children and young people learn; the ability to write creatively, logically and clearly, and capacity and willingness to work to deadlines. Ideally applicants will have excellent IT skills with experience developing or working with computer-based assessment and online learning tools, and will be familiar with current school curricula, resources and research related to effective educational practice. The successful candidate will also have the ability to provide leadership in research, including supervision of project team members and high-level organisational and project management skills, with excellent interpersonal skills.

The appointment is full-time in an ongoing capacity. The successful applicant will be based at ACER UK’s London office in West Hampstead. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus 17% ACER contribution to pension.

As part of the selection process, applicants will be assessed on their ability to write test questions and knowledge of assessment.  ACER is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment, and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We recognise the value of equity and diversity in the workplace and the significant advantages that a supportive and inclusive culture plays in helping our employees reach their full potential.
