Job overview

Summary of the role

Giggleswick School is seeking to appoint a Resident Assistant Housemistress/master (Pastoral) (RAHM) to Catteral House, its combined Year 7 and 8 and Junior Boarding House. It is an excellent opportunity for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-qualified individual wishing to play a significant role within this lively co-educational boarding school environment. The position will be incredibly rewarding, but is one that requires patience, resilience and a keen eye for detail.

The ability to encourage high standards, develop a positive rapport with pupils and parents and maintain a calm and caring atmosphere is essential. Sound judgment, excellent communication skills and a good sense of humour will also be invaluable!

Primarily, the role involves the provision of direct support to pupils and staff, assisting with the management of all aspects of the health, welfare and pastoral care of pupils, adhering to relevant school policies at all times. The successful applicant will work closely with the Catteral Housemistress and the resident & non-resident tutors to ensure the smooth day to day running of the House. They will also liaise closely with the Domestic and Properties departments.

A commitment to the values and expectations of this boarding community and to the welfare of the pupils is a vital component of the job.

Catteral House

Catteral is the Boarding House for Year 7 and 8 boarders. It also houses a small, but growing, contingent of Junior Boarders in Years 4 to 6.

Boarders reside in small, open dormitories split between a girls’ and boys’ side of house. There are currently 87 pupils in Year 7 and 8 and around 20 or more boarders each night in the week, with fewer on weekends. The School has a very happy boarding community and offers comfortable and attractive accommodation as well as a wide range of activities and events organised both in and out of School.

Boarding Structure

Giggleswick has six ‘vertical’ senior boarding houses into which boarding (full and flexi) and day pupils in Year 9 to 13 are integrated. There are two girls’ houses of around 65 pupils (Carr and Style) and four smaller boys houses of around 40 pupils (Morrison, Nowell, Paley and Shute). From September 2024, Shute House will be merged with Nowell and Paley to create two larger boys’ houses of around 65-70 pupils each.

Year 6 pupils from the Junior School transition to Catteral House in Year 7. Year 8 pupils from Catteral House transition to one of the six senior houses at Year 9.
