Ashville College is seeking to recruit a Resident French Language Assistant to join its very strong Modern Foreign Languages Department. The role provides an excellent opportunity for someone considering a career in teaching.  

The Assistant will join a thriving French department, with a history of strong results at GCSE and A Level.  They will work with individual pupils and groups, preparing them for oral exams and supporting them in their studies. The successful candidate will be a native-level French speaker' with a keen interest in the French language and culture. 

The Assistant will be offered accommodation in one of Ashville’s boarding houses and will be an integral part of Ashville’s award winning boarding team; this will include undertaking boarding duties and supervising boarding activities.  

Applicants must be educated at least to the final stage of their own secondary school system, (e.g. A-Level, IB, Baccalaureate or equivalent). Some previous teaching experience is desirable, although not essential. More important is a willingness to become fully involved in the Ashville community and to support pupils in their learning.

As this is a residential role, gender is a genuine occupational qualification; and applicant’s gender may be relevant in the appointment process.  However, at this stage applications from males and females are welcomed.

This role is offered on a fixed term contract from September 2019 to the end of the Summer term in 2020.

Ashville College is a co-educational, independent school for day and boarding pupils aged 2–18. The college, set in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, comprises a pre-school, prep school and senior school with pupil numbers totaling around 870, 170 of whom are in the sixth form and 100 are boarders. The school is a registered charity, administered by Ashville College Trustees.

Ashville College was founded in 1877 as a boarding school for boys by the United Methodist Free Church. Expansion over the decades culminated in a merger with Elmfield College, Harrogate, in the 1930s, by which time Ashville was the largest private school in the north of England.   The most significant development came in 1982 when the school become co-educational.
