ABOUT SUMMER BOARDING COURSES

Summer Boarding Courses (SBC) is a premium residential summer school provider for international students aged between 8 and 17 years old.

Since 2009 SBC has welcomed Young Learners from 139 different countries to study our courses in three prestigious UK boarding schools, and more recently, two Oxford University Colleges.

SBC is committed to providing our students with an exceptional experience. We guarantee a truly multinational learning environment which encourages cross-cultural learning, collaboration and friendship. In 2018 alone, SBC was home to students from 95 unique nationalities.

In 2018, The British Council awarded SBC the maximum number of Strengths in the 15 areas it assesses. As a result, SBC became the first and only multicentre summer school provider to be awarded 15 out of 15 areas of strength in a full inspection, thereby confirming us as one of the foremost course providers in the UK.

SBC has an excellent annual staff returner rate - 83% of our 2018 Management Team having worked for us previously as Managers, Teachers, Activity Leaders, College Mentors and House Parents. This, as well as significant training for all staff, ensures that our staff and students are fully supported and empowered to create a positive and mutually beneficial environment. 

THE ROLE

SBC Residential Summer College – University of Oxford seeks to appoint one Engineering and one History of Art college tutor. College Tutors are an integral part of a successful summer, and it is often their ability to engage the students both in and out of the classroom in a friendly yet professional manner that ensures students are happy throughout their stay.

All members of staff have a general duty to care for students at the college and as such will be expected to carry out the following duties:

• Become familiar with the SBC syllabus, materials and resources for their specific subjects during induction period.

• Teach lessons and set assignments using the SBC syllabus and other appropriate materials.

• Promote a student-centred learning environment, which encourages the development of 21st century skills

• Continuously assess students’ progress, marking assignments meaningfully and giving relevant feedback.

• Maintain administrative systems by preparing and keeping class lists, records of work, class registers and preparing certificates and reports.

• Manage the classroom behaviour effectively and ensure all students participate.

• Attend meetings as requested by the summer school management.

• Attend CPD (Continued Professional Development) workshops.

• Be observed by the Academic Management.

• Assist with meal time, break time supervision and student sign-in, where required.

• Support the College Mentors supervising students in the college accommodation.

• Help ensure that the students do not breach the rules of the college.

• Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with an emergency, or where a student is ill or injured.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

All College Tutors teaching a specific subject must hold the following qualifications and experience:

Essential Qualifications

• BA in relevant subject or related discipline

• Trinity certTESOL or CELTA certificate

• Minimum of 3 years’ post TEFL/ CELTA experience

• Experience teaching relevant subject

 Desirable Qualifications:

• MA in relevant subject or related discipline

• Experience working in a residential summer school environment

SBC PERSON SPECIFICATION

All members of staff employed by SBC will be expected to bring certain key qualities to the operation. There must be a professional interest in working with young people and particularly international children. Safety and welfare of the students is of paramount importance at SBC and a practical enforcing of this belief should be a quality exhibited by all staff.
