Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Rowing Coach to play a key role at Emanuel School Boat Club.

Working with the Director of Rowing and team of rowing coaches, you will work on building an effective and dynamic rowing environment for pupils. This will include assisting with the planning and coaching of rowing sessions and strength and conditioning sessions and assisting the other coaches at regattas and head races.

You will also need to take a proactive role in ensuring rowing equipment is packed up at the end of each session and be confident in carrying out minor repairs and equipment checks at the boat house in conjunction with the Boat House Manager.

Our facilities at the school and boat house are outstanding with an impressive fleet of boats and the School has a dedicated coaching team. There are currently plans to develop all sports facilities at Emanuel, including the boat house tank area into a performance gym for pupils. The school also has plans to develop its rowing boat fleet over a number of years.

Emanuel has a rich history in rowing with wins at the Schools Head of the River and Henley Royal Regatta. In recent years, boys and girls have medalled at National Schools and received sports scholarships to American rowing universities.

You must be available to work on Saturdays and be able to transport all pupils to sporting fixtures and be willing to escort pupils to and from the boat house via train on a daily basis.  The role will include working through school holidays and at weekends as required by the Director of Rowing.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience of coaching medal standard crews at a national level, including the National Schools Regatta. A proven track record as a coach for junior/school rowers, and the ability to safely operate a motor launch on the Tideway is also important. A specialist Sports and/or relevant British Rowing coaching qualification and ideally an RYA Powerboat qualification would be a significant advantage.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
