We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

Are you a pro-active student focussed careers advisor seeking an opportunity to lead careers advice and guidance in an excellent secondary school? This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified and/or experienced careers advisor to work in an outstanding school, which truly believes in its motto of achieving “excellence for all”.

St Mary’s has a strong track record of success at GCSE and A Level with a good proportion of students heading to university each year. Students’ behaviour at St Mary’s is exemplary and parental support is outstanding, allowing an excellent environment to develop your career further among our reflective and supportive staff. The right candidate will have excellent academic and careers guidance knowledge. You will be self-motivated, organised and confident.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area. At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades as well as students enrolling at elite Russell Group Universities (including Oxbridge) and successfully securing prestigious apprenticeships has risen significantly over recent years.

We are seeking to appointment a suitably qualified Careers Lead and Adviser to ensure that all students receive excellent and inspiring careers education and guidance across KS3-5 in order to help them plan and manage their current and future progression through education and beyond. The successful applicant will ideally hold a Diploma in Career Guidance or NVQ level 6 in Guidance or be willing to achieve this within a specified time frame.

Confident with individuals and groups, you will deliver careers lessons to whole classes, arrange individual meetings to give careers advice and manage careers events including mock interviews, careers carousels, enrichment activities and arranging external speakers.  As an important and integral part in the decision making process for our young people you will lead programmes and activities across the school, that engage and educate students on the skills required and opportunities for access to further and higher education, apprenticeships and employment including those involving third parties, parents and carers. You will actively engage in and support the planning of the areas of our PSHEE  programme that relate to careers and employability, as well as being responsible for the planning and delivering Work Experience.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants. St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
