Job overview

Required for September 2021, a full-time, permanent School Counsellor to join our successful pastoral team.

We are looking to appoint an experienced and qualified school counsellor to deliver counselling services to students experiencing a wide range of emotional problems, providing advice and guidance to parents, carers and the school. The person appointed will hold a relevant counselling or psychotherapy qualification and experience of working in a similar role with young people would be advantageous. The successful candidate will understand mental health issues and have the ability to develop therapeutic relationships with a calm and reassuring nature. Your positive attitude and ability to engage and encourage young people will be essential, as will your ability to work flexibly to meet their individual needs; liaising with the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Inclusion Lead, SMT and SENDCo.

Sheldon is a high-performing school with a strong record of success. It is a very happy school and staff morale is high. Our vision is to be a forward-thinking and outward-looking school.

“The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. The vibrant atmosphere created reflects the commitment to pupils’ enriching and positive school experiences.” Ofsted June 2017.

We are situated in attractive parkland on the edge of the rapidly growing market town of Chippenham, surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are good rail and road links to London, we are 5 minutes from junction 17 on the M4 and a 10-minute train journey to the beautiful Roman City of Bath.

If you are adaptable and enthusiastic with a commitment to working with students, we would very much like to hear from you.

Values and vision

Sheldon is an institution of high expectation and aspiration. It encourages children to develop academically, physically and spiritually through committed and dedicated teaching. It prides itself on being a place where unique individuals achieve their own aims. The school motto is "unity and loyalty", and Sheldon encourages all students to engage with different cultures and systems of belief.

There is particular progress for students in English and physical education, as well as creative subjects such as design and technology and art. A specialist school in science, sport and languages, Sheldon has multiple facilities for those subjects; the modern languages department, for example, has a frequently updated mobile library. The school newsletter, The Sheldon Standard, gives students the chance to submit articles – one of many opportunities available across the secondary school and sixth form.

Ofsted report

“Pupils enjoy attending Sheldon School. They feel safe and welcome. They are keen to take part in lessons and share their views confidently. The curriculum is ambitious for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities”
