Job overview

The English Mastery programme

English Mastery is a curriculum and teacher development programme that is designed to improve achievement for all pupils in key stage 3 English. The programme aims to deepen and accelerate students’ reading and writing progress by exposing them to a cumulative, knowledge-rich curriculum and by training teachers on subject pedagogy and the specific curriculum topics they will teach. From spring 2019 we will be working with over 120 partner schools nationwide from Sheffield to the Isle of Wight. We are now looking to grow our team in line with expansion of the programme.

English Mastery is incubated by Ark Ventures – part of the education charity Ark – which incubates, launches and supports organisations that have the potential to deliver widespread change in education and society.

School Development Lead role

The purpose of this role is to support the successful implementation of the English Mastery programme within a portfolio of partner schools. You will establish strong relationships with your schools, and provide ongoing training and coaching for teachers to ensure the programme meets the individual needs of staff and pupils.

You will be a crucial member of the team, working closely with the Head of School Development and other School Development Leads. You will ensure high quality and consistent programme delivery, celebrating success and sharing good practice.  You will also contribute to the design and development of curriculum and professional development materials.

This role is for a fixed term of 2 years in the first instance.

The ideal candidate will:

• Be qualified to teach (and work) in the UK, with at least three years’ English teaching experience, including experience of teaching key stage 3.

• Have a proven record of delivering outstanding achievement in English, particularly for pupils with low prior attainment in challenging schools.

• Have experience of:

o providing professional development to teachers, including coaching, mentoring and training

o successfully leading change in a school

o using research to improve outcomes

• Have up-to-date knowledge and use of the current English curriculum and assessment requirements, and a solid understanding of the education landscape and issues affecting English education.

• Have a genuine passion for English, a belief in the potential of every pupil and a desire to see English education transform pupils’ lives in the UK today.

Our offer

• Be at the leading edge of transforming English education across the UK.

• The opportunity to work in a dynamic team.

• Flexible working.

• A generous employer pension contribution.

• Excellent learning and development opportunities.

• Access to Ark Rewards scheme offering savings from over 3,000 major retailers, interest-free loans of up to £5,000 available for season tickets or a bicycle, and gym discounts offering up to 40% off your local gym.
