Job overview

SCHOOL MEDICAL CENTRE LEAD NURSE

Full time, term-time only - Excellent salary and benefits

This is an exciting opportunity for a Lead Nurse to lead and develop a small team to deliver an outstanding health service to all pupils at The Leys from August 2020.

The Leys is an independent co-educational boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18.  The School has its own Medical Centre, which has beds that allow sick pupils to be cared for, for short periods of time, in comfortable surroundings by professional staff 24 hours a day.

You will:

• have proven leadership experience and experience in School Nursing, Minor Injuries Nursing or Practice Nursing alongside strong organisational skills;

• be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly the ability to relate to young people, parents and colleagues and undertake line management responsibility for all Medical Centre Nurses and Medical Centre Assistants;

• be accountable for all aspects of Medical Centre care, including pupil in-patients;

• be responsible for the strategic development of the Medical Centre in line with recommended best practice;

• be computer literate to at least an intermediate standard and have experience of using medical databases; and

• be expected to work flexibly to provide additional clinical resource during weekly peak periods, cover absence as required and to ensure that the changing needs of our School are met.

Though in essence the Lead Nurse is supernumerary to the rota he/she will be expected to fulfil a minimum of 2 clinical shifts per week.  The Medical Centre is embedded in the wider school community and opportunity exists, should that be desired, for the post holder to contribute to the broader life of the school.

The Leys is a thriving school with a particularly friendly and supportive staff and pupil community.  This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  This school welcomes diversity.

The closing date for all completed applications is midday on Friday, 26th June. Applications will be reviewed as and when they are received. We reserve the right to close the vacancy early depending on the response we receive.

For an application form & full role profile, please see our website www.theleys.net   call 01223 508955 or email: hr@theleys.net

An enhanced DBS check and workplace references will be required; a 6 months probationary period will also apply. Evidence of eligibility to work in the UK required as applicable.

The first thing to say is that The Leys is the leading co-educational boarding and day school in Cambridge.

The second thing to say is that the above statement, whilst true, does not begin to convey what makes this such a special place.

The Leys is an inclusive and inspiring co-educational boarding and day school offering an incredible learning environment and pupil experience in Cambridge. Putting pupils at the heart of everything we do, our shared values create a strong, caring, and cohesive community. The successful candidate will be joining a dedicated, successful, and welcoming team of teaching and business professionals, committed to working together to combine their skills, experience, and insights to deliver an excellent education to our pupils.

The Leys is an extremely rewarding place to work. We hope you will take the time to look at our website, The Leys School, to find out more about us.

We are more than just a school. The Leys is a close-knit, engaged, friendly community in which pastoral care is seen as our top priority. I often say to visitors that we see ourselves as a big, small school: big enough to offer a huge range of opportunities, but small enough that we are able to get to know individuals, with all their individual strengths and unique characters, and able to encourage them to strive to be the best they can be. The confidence which our pupils gain from this encouraging family atmosphere is perhaps the greatest gift we can offer them – without it, they cannot hope to fulfil their potential in work and play.

Established in 1875, The Leys values its history, yet it blends traditional values – courtesy, kindness, tolerance, respect, decency – with a forward and outward-looking approach to education. Dedicated staff and superb facilities combine powerfully as we prepare young people for the challenges which lie ahead at university and beyond. Yet I have always believed that school is, or should be, about far more than merely “preparation for life”. Indeed, my ambition is that Leysians will be able to look back on their experiences here as amongst the most intrinsically rewarding, challenging and stimulating chapters of their developing lives.

Set in the centre of the beautiful and stimulating city of Cambridge, one of the world’s leading cultural and academic cities, our unique location allows our pupils unrivalled opportunities to achieve the exceptional. Our added-value in academic progress is highly impressive, and the range of creative, cultural and sporting opportunities is breathtaking. We are rightly proud of our pupils’ achievements, both in the classroom and outside it, but the greatest pride we have is in the pupils themselves. They are our greatest achievement.

I look forward to welcoming you.

Martin Priestley
