Job overview
School Staff Instructor (SSI)
Full Time or Part Time Role Available
(Required April 2025)
St Edmund’s College is a leading co-educational independent school located in a magnificent country setting in rural Hertfordshire. We are England's oldest Catholic school and offer an all-round co-education for students from 3 to 18 and for families from all faiths. Academic achievement is balanced by an emphasis on the spiritual, pastoral and co-curricular aspects of education. Together, these four key elements offer an experience that we believe is second to none.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced School Staff Instructor (SSI) to join our Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Founded in 1916, the College CCF continues to be a core activity at the centre of a full co-curricular programme. The CCF is made up of an Army and RAF section and is a popular activity amongst students. There is a busy training calendar of events and activities, and the Contingent has had considerable success in both regional and national competitions in recent years.
Reporting to the Contingent Commander, the SSI provides administrative, logistic and training support to the contingent and plays a key role working with the OCs to ensure we provide an enjoyable and challenging Cadet experience. It is expected that the candidates will have a Regular, Reserve or Cadet service background. Strong administrative and IT skills are essential together with a willingness to undertake all necessary MOD training for the role.
The SSI role is part time (3 days a week) and term time only. There is a requirement to attend training weekends and camps and support College events. The pro-rata salary is £21,000 per annum.
There is the possibility for additional responsibilities which could be combined with the SSI role to create a full-time role, and this is something that can be discussed prior to or at interview, depending on qualifications. Accommodation may be available for a candidate who is relocating and this can be discussed at interview.
• Whilst not in a teaching role, as School Staff Instructor (SSI) you will be working on a regular basis in a school in a role which gives opportunity for contact with children. As such, you will be in regulated activity and an enhanced DBS check (which includes children’s barred list information) will be required in advance of appointment.
• Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. As with all College staff members, you will therefore be responsible for providing a safe environment in which children can learn.
Any enquiries about the role are welcome and should be directed to hr@stedmundscollege.org or to the Contingent Commander Mr Charlie Upton at cupton@stedmundscollege.org
Closing date for applications when all forms must be received by HR is: Tuesday 17th February 2025
Interviews to take place: Week Beginning 24th February 2025

The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Candidates will be required to undergo relevant Safeguarding Checks.
We will seek references on short-listed candidates that will include questions about past disciplinary actions or allegations in relation to behaviour with children and may approach previous employers for information to verify particular experience or qualifications before interview.
This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020.
About St Edmund's College
An Independent Catholic Day and Boarding school, and England's oldest Catholic school, St Edmund's welcomes girls and boys from 3 to 18 years and from all faiths who appreciate the benefits of a Catholic education. Our historic campus offers modern facilities in a magnificent country setting, providing a safe and stimulating environment for young minds.
Scholarship is at the heart of our mission and our students are encouraged to learn, to explore and to ask the difficult questions. Small classes ensure that the academic progress of each student is regularly monitored and at every stage we adjust our teaching to suit the ability and needs of each child. The excellent relationships shared by our teachers and students create a positive setting for progress and success in the classroom. Students are encouraged to think independently and not to hold themselves back through fear of making mistakes.
Whilst we welcome students whatever their belief, the Catholic approach to education, with its distinctive ethos, remains at the heart of all we do in creating a learning community. What makes an Edmundian is a combination of academic endeavour, spiritual awareness and a strong sense of personal and social responsibility. At St Edmund’s we are committed not just to the academic growth of every child but also to his or her spiritual development regardless of religious background.
Today St Edmund’s offers not simply an education for Catholics but a Catholic education, welcoming people of all faiths ready to embrace the values that have made it and its predecessors such a successful seat of learning for over 400 years. Visitors say how they are struck by the atmosphere of the College which fosters a special sense of community and self awareness amongst staff and students who work here. Its four-hundred-year tradition of scholarship and spiritual reflection is still felt today in the classrooms and corridors.
