Haere mai!

Welcome to Westlake Boys High School and thank you for your interest in our school.

We are committed to providing an outstanding learning environment.  We help our students make the transition from boys into young men who are life-long learners, who respect themselves and others, contribute positively to society and have the skills and resilience to be adaptable in an ever-changing world.

We have students of more than 70 nationalities, who all bring different experiences, perspectives and values to our school, helping us learn and appreciate diversity.

Research shows that boys do better in all-boys schools. Academically our students achieve at the highest level, consistently placing us among the top schools in the country for the number of scholarships attained. The majority continue to study at tertiary level, many going on to attend some of the most prestigious universities in the world.  We cater for all abilities, providing the necessary support to ensure that every boy has the opportunity to achieve his potential.

Learning doesn’t happen only in the classroom.  Westlake Boys offers an enormous range of co-curricular activities and we encourage all our boys to get involved with whatever interests them, even if it means stepping outside their comfort zone.  This might be in one of our music ensembles or sports teams, a cultural group, the annual production or another of our many clubs.

We provide many opportunities to develop leadership skills and to serve the school and the community, encouraging all our young men to contribute their time and energy, as student coaches, as peer tutors, on student-led councils and leading local community projects, to name a few.

We look forward to meeting you and sharing your Westlake Boys journey with you.

Teaching Good Character

We our proud to offer traditional values within a modern, progressive learning environment.  We have high expectations regarding manners, behaviour and respect and we place significant importance on teaching positive character. We promote the skills that will help students communicate effectively, to think, creatively and critically and to cope with change.  We  encourage and guide our students to work effectively with others, to contribute meaningfully to the school community and wider society and to challenge themselves to step out of their comfort zone.  Our commitment to your Character Education is an important part of everything we  do at Westlake, inside and outside the classroom.

Developing Traditions

We honour our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, incorporating Māori tikanga - traditions and protocols - appropriately throughout school life. Our unique school traditions form an important part of our culture and help us all develop a sense of connection and belonging. On your first day at Westlake, you will proceed with all the new students through our archway, symbolising the start of your journey as a Westlake Boy.  You will not walk through the arch again until your last day at Westlake, when you become a ‘Westlaker’ and enter the world beyond school.

You will be placed in one of our six houses – Hood, Murchison, Pupuke, Smale, Stanley and Ururoto – and will be a member of this house for your whole time at Westlake.  The house system encourages healthy competition and a sense of pride and belonging within such a large school. Houses compete throughout the year in different activities for house points, which are tallied at the end of the year to determine the winners of the House Cup.  One of the first inter-house activities of the year is the highly-anticipated House Haka Competition, which ends with a rousing whole school Haka.

We pride ourselves on embedding traditional values within a modern, progressive learning environment.

School Description

Westlake Boys High School was established in 1962 on the North Shore of Auckland and is a popular boys' school in New Zealand. There are 2350 boys in the school and we offer the NCEA program to students from the ages of 13 to 18.

Our students are drawn from our local community and from a number of other countries. We welcome students from all of our communities, and currently have students with around 70 different cultural heritages. We are proud of all of our students and believe that every single young person has a huge amount to contribute to our school and all of our communities. We try to place the individual student at the heart of his own education, and to make sure that his learning is supported and guided with care and imagination.

Academic Programme and Grading System

A Westlake curriculum in the NCEA pathway consists of three levels:

Year 11 Level One Six subjects

Year 12 Level Two Six subjects

Year 13 Level Three Six subjects

Students can be awarded an Achieved, a Merit, or an Excellence for the overall level and for individual subjects. Levels are obtained through a series of internal and external assessments, authorised by the Ministry of Education. In addition, students gain a University Entrance (UE) qualification which entitles them to attend a New Zealand University. This is based on attaining an NCEA Level 3 qualification, with university approved subjects, together with the necessary Literacy and Numeracy qualifications.
