Job overview

We are already starting to think about recruitment for September 2019.  We know that one of our Science teachers will be relocating to teach abroad in September and two others are considering relocating elsewhere in the UK.

The Department and the Role:

Science is a strong, firmly established department which achieves good results and has an excellent reputation.  Our children enjoy their Science lessons.

In our last inspection in July 2016, OFSTED said that “Attainment and progress in science are very strong at key stage 3 and well above the national average at key stage 4.”  Past reports have praised the quality of teaching in Science.

The Science Department delivers a diverse range of examination courses:

  • GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science (Trilogy).
  • A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

At the top of our agenda is challenging, well structured, engaging and innovative teaching and learning in which pupils make measurable progress in every lesson and are aware of what they need to do to take the next step in their learning.  Our team of Leading Practitioners support staff in their continuous professional development and disseminate good practice.  Three of our Leading Practitioners are Science specialists.

The Candidate:

Applications welcome from experienced Science teachers with a track record of rapid pupil progress or from potential NQTs who are making good progress on their courses.

We welcome applications from Biology, Chemistry or Physics specialists.  You will teach all specialisms at KS3 and your own specialism at KS4.  There may be an opportunity for the right candidate to teach KS5.

We have an NQT induction programme which is considered to be an exemplar of good practice.  This is an excellent place for an outstanding Science Teacher to develop their career.

Applicants with a long history of supply teaching need not apply.  This post is not open to agencies.

About Us:

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well established programme for providing NQT’s with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.

Vacancy details, application forms and guidance notes can all be downloaded from the website.  Applications can also be emailed directly to the School through the website.
