Job overview

Science Department at St Bede’s School

We’re a friendly, supportive group of technicians, who work in a dynamic department in an outstanding school and we're looking to recruit a team player to replace a member of the 6 strong team.  Within the overarching team, where we support each other across subjects when the need arises, we operate in smaller teams of 2, each focusing on their specialism of biology, chemistry or physics.  The advertised role is for a chemistry technician but we would consider candidates with a broad base of skills.

The hours will be 21 per week with a suggested pattern of 08:30-12:30 Monday - Thursday and 08:30-13:30 on Friday; there is a degree of flexibility and the daily working pattern can be discussed at interview. It is a term time appointment, including inset days, plus one week of work during the school holidays.

There is no entitlement to take leave during term time.  All holidays must be taken during school breaks. Annual salary includes payment for holiday entitlement.

The role is busy and varied, with no two days the same.   A willingness to learn is key and there are plenty of opportunities for CPD, so if you’d like more information or would like to talk further about the role, then please contact the Lead Technician, Tracey, via the school switchboard or by email: tsh@saintbedes.net.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Please note applications for this vacancy will be viewed upon receipt and as such, the vacancy may close prior to the deadline stated.  Early applications are encouraged.

Why work for us?

  • St Bede's is a good place to work. Staff are friendly and supportive of one another: relationships between staff and pupils were recognised by Ofsted as 'exceptionally strong'.
  • ECTs benefit from a well developed and comprehensive induction period programme. More experienced teachers are given the opportunity to participate in training which will help them to develop skills needed for middle and senior management roles.
  • There are good on-site catering facilities. Staff are able to use the fitness facilities free of charge and to participate in sports activities.
  • Music is a big part of school life and staff are welcome to join our senior choir and instrumental groups.
  • We have a social event at the end of each term as well as occasional staff trips to the theatre.
  • The school is situated in Redhill, a commuter belt town in the Surrey Fringe area. We are close to the M25 and there are good transport links to London and the South Coast from Redhill station which is about 15 minutes walk from the school. We also benefit from being within walking distance of beautiful countryside . Many staff live locally, others commute from Guildford, South London, Kent and East & West Sussex.

In March 2023 Ofsted carried out an inspection of St Bede’s and judged the school outstanding.

St Bede’s is a good place to work. The community is vibrant, focused on learning and caring for our students. Staff relationships are very strong, supportive and welcoming.  Our students like the school and behaviour is outstanding. We have approximately 1900 mixed ability students aged 11-18.  This includes over 300 studying academic courses in the sixth form. Our GCSE exam results make us one of the highest performing non-selective state schools in the country reflecting the very effective three way partnership we enjoy; hardworking pupils, committed staff and supportive parents.

We welcome applications from ECTs and more experienced teachers. Whatever your level of experience, and regardless of whether you are a teacher or member of support staff, this is a school where you will have opportunity to develop.  Teachers in their ECT years benefit from an excellent level of support through mentoring and a full ECT programme.

St Bede’s is unique.  This is the only state-funded school where Anglicans, Roman Catholic and the Free Churches are bound together in a formal partnership to provide a common Christian education, which values the distinctive contribution of each tradition.  St Bede’s is a charitable trust jointly held by the Anglican Diocese of Southwark and the RC Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.  Staff can be of any religion, or none at all, but must be able to support the ethos of the school.

Our facilities are very good; staff have free access to fitness facilities and there is very good on-site catering.  Teaching and support staff have opportunities to be involved in a very wide range of activities and visits.  We are situated in Redhill Surrey with good transport links to both London and the south coast.  We are very close to beautiful countryside.  This area offers the best of all worlds!

Our school is committed to the safeguarding of children so all appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. Only applications made on our School Application form will be considered; we do not accept CVs or unsolicited testimonials.  It is our policy always to request references prior to interview.

Please note that due to the very high introductory fees charged by agencies,  we will only consider CVs submitted via them if insufficient high calibre applications are received.  Please do not rely on an agency to put you forward for a post at St Bede's to which you are attracted.

We look forward to hearing from you.
