About Us

Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form is a unique sixth form established in 2018 to provide an outstanding vocational education and preparation for skills-based work or transition to university for students in Croydon and the surrounding boroughs.

Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form caters for students who may not suit the traditional pathways at post-16. With small class sizes and strong pastoral support, we offer excellent, focused vocational options up to level 3 as well as the opportunity to take or resit GCSEs that students need to progress further – whether they choose to progress into a career or higher education.

Our academy offers pathways in Construction, Science, Art, Business, Media Studies and Health and Social Care for students choosing a vocational pathway, and a curriculum that will challenge and inspire them to develop the skills and confidence they need to compete successfully for jobs in their chosen vocation.

Much of London and the South East, is undergoing a huge programme of construction and regeneration with the potential to benefit the area for generations to come. With a focus on hard skills and employability, Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form helps students develop the skills they need to be who they want to be.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Your main areas of responsibility will be:

  • Ensure equipment is prepared for lessons
  • Effective care and maintenance of labs, equipment, animals and plants
  • Organise Safety and security of disposal of hazardous waste
  • Organise, efficient storage and record keeping of equipment and chemicals
  • Carry out regular safety checks of all science-based equipment, recording faults and action taken
  • Keep up to date with health and safety regulations and with developments in practical science, attending relevant courses and reading publications
  • Maintaining central records relating to accidents or dangerous occurrences and monitor action taken
  • Assist in practical lessons when requested
  • Participate in Academy day trips when requested

Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for:

  • At least 2 years working as a technician in a school or educational establishme
  • Educated to A level or equivalent (A level in either Physics, Chemistry or Biology) NVQ 3 or BTEC 
  • Other training in relation to Science 
  • Trained in the use of a variety of ICT packages 
  • Basic knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations 
  • A good understanding of a range of chemicals and their properties

Personal Skills & Qualities

  • Full working knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice
  • At least 2 years working as a technician in a school or educational establishment
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments
  • The ability to encourage and inspire young people to achieve
  • Good organisational skills 
  • Good ICT skills
  • Ability to work in an organised and methodical manner
  • Ability to work effectively and supportively as a member of the Academy team
  • Ability to undertake a range of practical tasks
  • Ability to carry out routine maintenance of equipment

Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form is opening in September 2018 and will provide an outstanding vocational education and preparation for skills based work or transition to university for students in Croydon and those from surrounding boroughs. This new academy with up to date, state of the art facilities, will recruit students from across Croydon and the wider London area focusing on the hard skills that will be needed in an area undergoing considerable reconstruction and rejuvenation. By focusing from the outset on the goal of employability within a number of sectors, we have created a curriculum that challenges and inspires, creating well rounded students who have the drive and ambition to succeed in their chosen area of work with additional skill sets that put them above others competing for jobs in their chosen vocation.
