Hereford Sixth Form College has over 2000 full-time 16-19 students and an excellent reputation for its results and extra-curricular provision. Rated Ofsted outstanding in 2007 and again in 2023, the College consistently achieves one of the highest Advanced Level points scores per entry of over 100 SFC’s nationally and has outstanding value added results as measured by both the ALIS and ALPS systems.

The Science Department offers A-level courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science as well BTEC qualifications in forensic science/applied science and engineering. There are currently three Science Technicians at the College, who work collaboratively to support the different departments and this position has arisen due to the departure of one of the current technicians.

We are looking for a part-time Science Technician to join our Science Department to assist in the provision of technical and administrative support for the A level biology and BTEC Forensic Science/Applied Science courses. As this course involves chemistry, biology and physics, we are looking for someone who can provide practical support in all three areas. The successful candidate would receive support from other technicians. A commitment to professional development and training is required.

The successful science technician will:

·        assist with, and manage, the science equipment in the science department

·        provide support in Biology, Chemistry and Physics areas

·        prepare equipment and apparatus before lessons in accordance with teacher requirements

·        assist pupils and teaching staff during practical classes including demonstration of skills, techniques and equipment, provision of advice etc, at an appropriate level

You MUST have:

·        Previous science education (e.g. degree in a related subject), and/or appropriate experience

·        A passion for science

·        A friendly and approachable personality

Applicants should preferably have experience of working in a learning environment and have excellent planning, administration and organisation skills.

The successful candidate will be passionate about supporting the teaching and learning of students at the College.

The position is for 25 hours per week (term-time only) and would preferably be over five days. However, there is a degree of flexibility and this can be discussed prior to, or at, an interview. The forensic science/applied science qualification was introduced in 2020 and the number of students taking the course has increased each year. If the course continues to grow, then the number of hours required may increase.
