Science Technician

Designation: Permanent. Support staff contract 

Hours of Work:  30 hours per week.

Salary: Sixth Form Support Staff Pay Spine 15 -17 (£15,781 - £16,532) 

Pro-rata equivalent for 30 hours per week is £10,373 pa to £10,866 pa.

Responsible to: Curriculum Leader [Science] 

Purpose: To provide a range of services to Science staff and students, with particular reference to the preparation of equipment for practical work, the maintenance of appropriate supplies and the provision of a safe working environment within the Science area.

Key duties

· Preparing equipment/apparatus/solutions etc. as requested by Science teaching staff;

· Ensuring that appropriate equipment and materials are available for use;

· Ensuring that all equipment is in working order, and arranging repairs/ replacements as required;

· Maintaining a catalogue of all practicals so as to facilitate the planning of equipment and materials needs;

· Liaising with teachers in order to anticipate future needs;

· Being available in the Science area so as to support teachers engaged in practical work with students;

· Ensuring safe practice with regard to the conduct of practical sessions and the storage/handling of chemicals;

· Cleaning and tidying laboratories and other Science areas at the end of practical sessions;

· Developing and making unusual equipment/apparatus, including specific items of glassware;

· Maintaining and caring for livestock and flora as required;

· Assisting with the production of displays in the Science areas;

· Dealing with day-to-day staff and student queries as required;

· Assisting with daily routines, including cover for absent staff as required;

· Carrying out other reasonable duties/activities required by the Principal and/or Curriculum Lead.
