Science Tutor - Distance Learning, Access to HE LtdWorking from home and resident within 2 hour travel distance of the Central Office in Todmorden, West Yorkshire

The Role

We are seeking a Science Tutor who is able to teach Biology and Chemistry on Access to Higher Education programmes. Qualifications in other Sciences areas would be a bonus. You should have a teaching qualification suitable for Further Education and a degree in your specialist subject area.

You will be responsible for front line support of your learners, working as a teaching professional, providing curricular and pastoral support consistently and reliably across your caseload. Your role needs to provide structure and focus to assist the learners to manage their workload and make continued progress through their course.

You will be teaching by distance learning using telephone, email, text, WhatsApp and video conferencing and will need to communicate in a personable manner across a range of media. Unlike many distance learning providers, we offer a very and proactive service for our learners who often initially lack self-confidence and may have had a less than ideal experience of education in schools. We encourage and support our learners to progress. The testimonial section on our web site provides and excellent insight into the learner/tutor relationship -

You will need to be able to mark and grade students’ work effectively against specified assessment criteria. You also need to be able to provide advice and support to students with respect to Higher Education applications via the UCAS application system and provide references. You will provide constructive feedback, complete mark sheets, mark and return student work, including examinations, within agreed time frames.

For these reasons, you will need to be well organised and autonomous, keeping accurate records on our Online College Management System. You will also need to reply promptly to communications from learners and staff.

The Team

You will work as part of an established team and interact regularly with both other tutors and colleagues with different roles within the organisation. Although the work is primarily from home, you will meet regularly with colleagues at full team meetings and subject-specialist meetings for curriculum development, moderation, verification and standardisation.

The staff turnover in the organisation is very low because we treat colleagues with respect as teaching professionals and avoid the ‘blame culture’ which seems quite prevalent across the education sector; preferring to take an open and supportive approach to issues which may arise. Also, the interaction you have with colleagues, mentors and managers means that, although you enjoy the benefits of a flexible role, working from home, you do not miss out on the team interaction and mutual support.

Other Information

You will be required to work some evenings in order to provide contact times for learners across different times of day as many have full time jobs and other commitments. Weekend work may be occasionally required but is not common.

You will need to provide your own computer and internet connection but we will provide you with a mobile phone.

We would strongly advise that you visit our web site  to get a real feel for what we are like as an organisation, our ethos, our learner focused operation and our commitment to our staff.
