Working with the Head of Mathematics to lead the Department in achieving outstanding teaching and learning and to inspire, encourage and empower our pupils to achieve their very best in the subject of Mathematics

In addition to the responsibilities of a Classroom Teacher, the Second in Charge of Mathematics has the following key responsibilities:

Key Stage Coordination:

  • Manage the assessment of a Key Stage appropriate to the candidate’s expertise and interest (assessment materials, mark schemes and feedback grids and the provision of exam papers).
  • Ensure that staff have entered test and exam results into department spreadsheets, and that class results grids have been completed correctly
  • Monitor the progress of all girls within the Key Stage, including coordination of any post test/exam implementation

Enrichment:

  • Coordinate the admin for the UKMT Maths Challenges and the preparation of the pupils for the UKMT Team Challenges
  • Provide and monitor the delivery of extension tasks across Maths.
  • Monitor the progress of the most able pupils.
  • Keep abreast of latest teaching methods to share with the department, develop the most able pupils and encourage Maths beyond A-Level

General:

  • Inducting new members of staff, supporting them with administrative tasks, both within the department and whole school, in conjunction with the Head of Department
  • Management of textbook distribution and collection.
  • Carry out the appraisals as directed by the Head of Department.
  • Deputising for the Head of Department when absent

The successful candidate will ideally:

  • Be a proven excellent teacher with a proven track record of delivering on academic performance
  • Be able to evaluate teaching and learning taking place across the Key Stages and deliver useful feedback that will further improve provision
  • Be a team player with pupils’ best interests at the core of decisions and actions taken
  • Possess strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues
  • Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives
  • Committed to professional development and show a willingness to undertake appropriate training for this role
  • Committed to Surbiton High School’s ethos

Surbiton High School has approximately 1600 pupils aged between 4 and 18. Our Preparatory Schools are divided into the Girls’ Preparatory School and Boys’ Preparatory School, and the Senior School is girls only from age 11 upwards.
