Full Time, Permanent - Second in Department- Design Technology

Starting from April 2023

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Design Technology Teacher to join our collaborative and supportive DT Department from September 2023.

This position would suit an experienced teacher in a friendly and supportive school. You may already be a second in subject, or you may be ready to take your first step into subject leadership.

We have extensive experience of providing excellent mentoring and support to new staff.

You will have excellent subject knowledge and will be able to offer all elements of Resistant Materials, Textile and Electronics at key stage 3, however, you may specialise in one specific discipline at key stage 4.

Information about the Department

Our Design Technology Department will comprise Textiles, Resistant Materials, Electronics and Food Technology. we are seeking to appoint a highly motivated professional who has a real love for their subject area. The ability to teach another specialism within Design Technology would be an advantage. The successful candidate will teach Design and Technology to Key Stages 3, and 4. Within the DT rotation at KS3, an ability to teach across Design Technology in Food Technology would be an advantage. Any experience in this subject would be advantageous but not essential as all training will be provided.

DT is taught under the umbrella of the Technology area. Students enjoy a varied and creative curriculum experience across Key Stage 3 that gives them access to the full range of skills. In year 10, students can opt to choose from our wide range of subjects that includes Art, Food and Textiles. Each of the GCSE subjects provides wide ranging experiences of using and applying a range of techniques and skills associated with each of the specialisms. The students study stimulating contextual source materials and information on significant artists, designers and creatives. Skills, knowledge and understanding are built up within the classroom from year 7 that allow students to respond independently to design briefs and themes. All of the GCSE subjects offered are popular choices at BMGS with a track record of high levels of progress and attainment. Year on year, the Technology Department achieves consistently excellent results and as a result is growing rapidly. The Department has a range of specialist rooms, technology, equipment, and materials at its disposal, including access to iPads and an IT suite. We are proud to offer our students a range of enrichment opportunities both on and off site, including participation in gallery workshops, workshops with artists and designers and visits to galleries and museums.

If you believe that you have the energy, passion, resilience, and drive to be part of our positive journey we would love to have you on our team. Visits to the School are welcomed and encouraged and for any queries linked to the post, you could contact the School HR via telephone or email.

There has never been a better time to work at BMGS than now. This is no ordinary school. We are a lovely school with a genuine ‘feel good factor’ throughout. BMGS is an ambitious and caring community, committed to fulfilling the gifts of each student, reflected in the School’s mission statement. Our mission is summed up by 3 words, Success for All, which underpin what we’re all about.

We had an Ofsted visit in Dec 2022 and school has been judged Requires Improvement. The new Ofsted framework emphasise more on a rich and varied curriculum and how it is taught than pupil progress and attainment in GCSEs. Regardless of current Ofsted grading of Requires Improvement, the school has continued to maintain its ranking in the top 20% nationally for Progress 8. The school’s GCSE results have been top of the borough for the last five consecutive years. The school has a track record of sustainable school improvements, and are looking to strengthen our team in the future.

Bolton Muslim Girls’ School is always over-subscribed with first choice applications. To meet with the growing demands for places and due to school’s popularity as a high achieving school, the school had been successful in securing a capital funding for expansion in 2019. The additional capacity resulted in 30 additional places in Yr.7 with effect from 2020. The school will have 750 pupils on roll by September 2024. It is an exciting time at Bolton Muslim Girls’ School. The increased pupil population and recent Ofsted outcome has generated more career opportunities for staff through the review of the current curriculum and staffing structure. All DT facilities are currently located on the second floor of the Mill Building adjacent to the school and we will continue to expand them further through the development of the third floor and Ground Floor of the Mill Building.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to further develop their career and join a passionate department that aim to provide a positive learning experience for their students.

"Leaders have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour. Most pupils meet these expectations. Classrooms are calm and orderly places. Pupils settle to their work and behave very well in lessons" Ofsted December 2022

"Pupils are exceptionally keen to do well in class. Their concentration in lessons helps them to learn and remember more" Ofsted December 2022
