English Department

St Thomas More Catholic School English Department is a dynamic and enthusiastic department with a collaborative approach to teaching and learning within daily practice and future planning. Our approach to our curriculum is underpinned by the level of challenge expected in Key Stage 2 and ensuring a varied, engaging and challenging curriculum supports all pupils in preparing for Key Stage 4 and beyond. Interleaved learning is at the core of our planning.

The department is committed to continually reviewing and updating units of learning and teaching and learning styles, in order to engage students and facilitate achievement. We adopt a range of strategies in the classroom to allow pupils to develop communication skills and become autonomous learners. There are currently 12 members of staff in the department with a wealth of experience, including several teachers with additional whole school responsibilities.

St Thomas More Catholic School

We have a long tradition for both the academic success of our pupils, and the outstanding behaviour that our pupils routinely demonstrate. In terms of this year's academic achievements more than 70% of pupils secured a Grade 4  in both English and Maths GCSE. Many students also achieved the very highest grades with 22% of pupils achieving Grades 7 to 9 or its equivalent in all of their subjects. At Key Stage 5 results continue to demonstrate the success of our curriculum and this has resulted in ensuring that all pupils have a pathway to further education, employment or training. 95% of students were successful through UCAS with 41% of pupils moving on to Russell Group Universities. Our average A Level grade continues to be high at B-.
