Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a highly effective Second in Department to support the Head of Department. This is an excellent opportunity for an inspiring subject specialist to lead on identified roles within the department. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching English across all key stages and must be prepared to teach GCSE. Experience of delivering WJEC/EDUQAS specifications would be advantageous, but not essential, as you will benefit from the expertise of our Directors of English working across our academies.

You will be an excellent teacher with some leadership experience and the ability to challenge individuals whilst supporting them to achieve outstanding results. In your classroom, you will create a positive and inspiring learning environment for our students. We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and driven individual who has the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘Students First’.

Just 30 minutes from Sheffield and Doncaster and with good links to both the M1 and A1, Outwood Academy Portland is a thriving learning community for both students and staff. Our staff are dedicated to securing the best possible outcomes for every student and are enormously proud of Ofsted’s Outstanding rating awarded in 2014. The hard work of both students and staff culminated in student progress placing the academy well within the top 5% of schools nationally and in 2016, 95% of our students achieved a grade of A*-C in English.

The academy is part of Outwood Grange Academies Trust, which is nationally recognised as one of the highest performing multi academy trusts in the country. Outwood Academy Portland’s achievements, and transformation under the Trust, have been recognised by the DfE in a recent case study available on their website.

There are significant opportunities for your development through the Outwood Institute of Education, and we are part of the Outwood Grange Teaching School Alliance which provides high quality professional development for all staff.

You will be joining a highly innovative and inspirational organisation, so we are seeking only outstanding candidates who can realise the highest possible quality of services to support our educational vision. Your strong leadership and ability to provide effective support to colleagues will enable the organisation to achieve the best possible outcomes for all of our students.

We would be delighted to welcome any prospective applicants to come and visit the academy.

We are proud that Outwood Academy Portland is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. We are an 11-18 academy based in the large friendly town of Worksop, near Sheffield and Nottingham.

Since joining the Outwood Family in 2012, our students have achieved impressive exam result success.

We have created an educational environment where staff and students constantly strive to improve; where teachers sharpen their skills and expand their repertoires to deliver an outstanding learning experience; and where teachers, classroom assistants, mentors, tutors, inclusion support assistants and students operate as a seamless team. This enables everybody, staff and students, to not only see but also help fulfil the potential in each other. Following its latest visit, Ofsted noted that our ‘teachers and support staff comment positively about the opportunities they have for regular training to develop their skills.’

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

If you share our vision, join our family.
