Second in Department - Humanities

Salary: MPS/UPS + OLW + TLR2B

The Federation and Academy

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is a very successful 3-18 school, proud to belong to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation. We offer an exciting and innovative model for education within the community that we serve, with broad appeal to parents and pupils alike.

Offering education across all key stages which has consistently been judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted, most recently in May 2018

Facilities at the school are first class; from the building itself to the resources which support the delivery of a broad curriculum including an extremely popular and well maintained Learning Resource Centre. Our playing fields, gymnasium, drama theatre and ICT facilities all contribute to ensuring we deliver an education for character, a feature of all Haberdashers’ schools that is part of our DNA.

We take a comprehensive mix of children and expect nothing less than the highest personal goals for each pupil.  Where pupils are disadvantaged, we expect them to make rapid progress to catch up with their peers. Our focus is to ensure each child we teach can read, write and do mathematics to a good standard in order to be successful in their education and life.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is 30 minutes from London Bridge by train and the school’s proximity to the capital is a strong factor in enabling teachers to enhance the cultural experience for our pupils through enrichment activities.

The Role

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated individual to support the Head of Department in leading our Humanities department. A committed individual keen to progress to middle leadership in the future, perhaps as a head of department, would be well suited to this position. Alternatively, this role offers an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain experience of the leadership of a larger department containing multiple subjects.

The core purpose of the Second in Department in Humanities post is to contribute to the continuing development of the Humanities curriculum and to the overall development of the department, supporting the Head of Humanities and deputising for him/her as required.  This role offers a passionate and innovative candidate an exciting opportunity to lead specifically on the development of the KS3 curriculum, whilst contributing to the wider leadership and development of the faculty at KS4 and KS5.

The Humanities department within Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy boasts a wide subject offer, with GCSEs and A-Levels offered in History, Geography, Religious Studies, Sociology, Politics and Philosophy & Ethics. As Second in Department, we will expect you to actively contribute to the academic and personal wellbeing of all students. There is an opportunity for you to make a significant impact on the experience of students at KS3, through your creative and inspiring approach to learning.

The Candidate

A skilled professional, you will have strong subject knowledge and specialise in History, Geography or RS, and be willing to teach across the Humanities subjects at KS3. Experience of teaching History, Geography, Sociology or Philosophy at A level, would be desirable.

Application

If you feel that this position is of interest and you have the right experience, motivation and are committed to providing an excellent education for all children, then we’d like to hear from you.
