Details

The British School, Alexandria is a small boutique school, situated in the prime residential district of Alexandria on the North Coast of Egypt. We are a school, in which staff and students work together to achieve greatness in learning. We are currently seeking a Biology teacher who can offer KS3 and IGCSE. A willingness to teach AS/A2 level Biology is desirable but not essential.

If you want to work in a school in which children and parents are engaged with their education, and very supportive of the British Nature of the school, you really should think about applying for this rare position.

The Science department currently delivers the English National Curriculum in a 2-year KS3 programme, followed by CIE single award IGCSE Sciences. At AS/A2 we offer Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

As a teacher, you will be appreciated by the students, parents, governors and leadership. You will be empowered to make a difference in children’s lives both academically and holistically. As a leader, you will be encouraged to develop yourself and your department, as well as have a strong influence on the future direction of the school.

Teaching in Egypt is both rewarding and challenging. The challenge comes from the cultural differences, and, if embraced, you will find a wonderful life and a brilliant professional opportunity here at the school.

The British School, Alexandria is a long-established, high-achieving and forward-thinking 3-18 International School known for its family atmosphere. It enjoys an excellent reputation both within Alexandria and further afield. It is recognised by the DfE and is an accredited member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). In our 2019 BSO inspection, we were described as a “Good school with many outstanding features”. We are committed to ensuring excellent learning and teaching in a caring environment. You will find the school a rewarding and friendly place to work with good relationships between staff and students. We have a strong commitment to the professional development of all our staff.

We are the first and only school in Africa to be honoured with the High-Performance Learning (HPL) accreditation and the first school in Africa to be part of the Fellowship of World Class Schools. We believe in the growth-mindset philosophy of HPL and are enriching our students with the cognitive and attitude tool kit to thrive in an ever-competitive 21st-century global society. We would be seeking to appoint a candidate who has a similar mindset and who understands the importance of modern pedagogical research to inform their delivery of lessons.

Alexandria is a bustling, friendly and cosmopolitan city on the Mediterranean, full of historical interest. Life for teachers is enjoyable with a low cost of living and sufficiently good infrastructure, shops, cafes and restaurants to lead a European lifestyle. Most teachers are able to save at least 60% of their salary and, at the same time, enjoy exploring Egypt. Although in the past Egypt has appeared in the media, you will find that living in Alexandria is in reality similar to living in any other big city with no particular security issues and a strong and stable government.

We have recently celebrated our 35th Anniversary and continue to be one of the leading schools in Alexandria and the surrounding area.  We have close links with the British Embassy - our Patron is Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to Egypt.  The school is a deliberately relatively small 3-18 British international school (520 students).  It is recognised by the DfE and is an accredited member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).  It is a high achieving and forward thinking school which enjoys an excellent reputation. We are committed to ensuring excellent learning and teaching in a caring environment.  You will find the school a rewarding and friendly place to work with good relationships between staff and students.  We have a strong commitment to the professional development of all our staff.

Foundation children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.  Students in the remaining Key stages follow the British National Curriculum.  In KS4 students study for IGCSEs and A-levels in the Sixth Form.  Although our curriculum is based on the British system, we try to ensure that it incorporates the history, geography, language and culture of Egypt as well as having a strong international dimension.  All students also study Arabic.

Our vision is to provide a quality 3-18 British International education in Alexandria which is underpinned by outstanding teaching to develop knowledgeable, caring, compassionate, respectful global citizens and lifelong learners who will have both the desire and capabilities to help to make our world a better place.

A good proportion of our students are Egyptian nationals but we also have a significant number of students from other countries, with over 23 different nationalities represented including neighbouring Middle Eastern/African countries as well as a smaller proportion from Europe.

The temperate Mediterranean climate in Alexandria ensures cooler summers and warmer winters than in several other parts of Egypt.  In winter (January/February) there are some rainy days with temperatures ranging between 10 and 20°C, summers are renowned for the refreshing sea breeze, with temperatures between 22 and 34°C.
