English Teacher: Secondary

The successful candidate will have imagination, flexibility and enthusiasm and will form part of a team of seven energetic and highly motivated teachers. The candidate will have a range of teaching experience, likely to include KS3 and KS4.  Recent work with second language learners will be important.

Applications would also be welcomed from candidates with experience of KS2, AS / A level English Language, ESL Cambridge English Curriculum as well as IELTS.

The department’s work is crucial to the success of all students, the majority of whom are Arabic speakers utilising English as their main working language. Programmes are flexible and individualised, taking into consideration the needs of students with a wide range of abilities. Class sizes are small, which allows for truly bespoke and differentiated teaching and learning. Providing access to the full range of subjects in the curriculum demands effective teaching in the English department. Members of the department work very closely as a team, holding regular planning and evaluation meetings. They also work closely with the Literacy Coordinator, the Learning Resource Centre Manager, Learning Support and other departments to ensure that literacy needs across the whole school are addressed.

As well as taking core English, students in Years 7 to 11 have literacy and library lessons. Year 11 pupils are entered for a combination of examinations including IGCSE English as a Second Language, First language and English Literature.  Post 16 it is possible for students to take CIE International English Language. However, the majority of students take a one-year school-designed course in Year 12, which includes preparation for SAT, IELTS and EMSat examinations, as well as work experience.

Rashid School for Boys opened in 1986 under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. We are a small, well funded school located in Nadd Al Shiba on the edge of Dubai and have outstanding facilities and a beautiful campus. The school is dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in the academic and social development of its students. Classes are small so that each student receives close personal attention.

The Students

The majority of students are UAE Nationals and most join the school at the age of three or four. Most students leave at the age of seventeen or eighteen and move to universities and colleges in the UAE and around the world.

The Curriculum

Most lessons are taught in English and the curriculum is developed from the UK National Curriculum. The school gives great importance to the teaching of Arabic language and Islamic Studies, and follows the Ministry of Education courses in these subjects. Arab history and culture are incorporated into the social studies courses. Grades 10 and 11 lead to United Kingdom General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations (GCSE). In Grades 12 and 13, all students are thoroughly prepared for university and college entry by one of two programmes: UK Advanced Level examinations are studied for entry to all UK universities and the best US universities. The High School Diploma course is specially designed for students going to other universities and colleges. Students take part in a wide range of activities throughout the year. These include camping, sailing, windsurfing, ice-skating, scuba-diving, and field trips to the UK plus many other opportunities.

The Faculty

The school has a well qualified and experienced teaching staff. The majority are UK graduates but we also have teachers from the USA, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Ireland, Jordan and Tunisia.
