Grade 8, teaching-focused with allocated time for scholarship and citizenship

Job Summary

We are now recruiting a Lecturer in Secondary Mathematics Education to join our PGDipEd (QTS) programme team and contribute to the teaching, research and engagement activities of the School of Education as a whole. 

The successful applicant will make a key contribution to the PGDipEd, recruiting ITE students; contributing to teaching and assessment in Mathematics and Professional Enquiry; undertaking personal tutoring; and working collaboratively with school mentors. 

The successful applicant will also be invited to contribute to activities across the School, such as: 

•   Undergraduate and postgraduate taught quantitative research methods 

•   Educational Leadership programmes

•   Schools improvement activities 

•   School-level decolonising the curriculum and wider equalities activities

•   Relationship-building with mathematicians in the University of Birmingham School and in other parts of the University

•   Research and scholarship through our research Centres, groups and clusters

•   Impact and engagement activities across the School and applicants areas of interest

Main Duties/Responsibilities

 

Teaching focused Lecturer role-holders will:

•   Teach and examine courses at a range of levels

•   Undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining. 

•   Contribute to leading curriculum development and/or renewal

•   Develop and manage approaches to teaching and learning that are innovative to the subject area or institution

•   Advise others on aspects of learning, teaching and assessment

•   Developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely

•   Play an important role in student academic support

•   Frequently update their own subject expertise and undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching and using student and peer review feedback to enhance own teaching and learning processes

•   Inform their teaching practice by discipline-based research

•   Actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable environment

•   Play an important role in the recruitment and admission of students

•   Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work, and (where appropriate) co-supervise doctoral students to completion

•   Contributing to Departmental/School administration

•   Making a major contribution to some administrative activities within the University (e.g.appeals panels, working groups)

•   Managing enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities

•   Develop and make a substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach

•   Developing activities that enhance the student experience or employability and which benefits the College and University.

Person Specification

•   Recent teaching experience in school or on a programme of initial teacher education

•   Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

•   Normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually a PhD or equivalent qualifications, or a desire to complete a higher degree) 

•   Substantial teaching and research or scholarship experience within the subject specialism

•   Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage teaching and learning 

•   Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.

Teaching

•   Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes

•   Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, and advising colleagues

•   Experience and success in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability

•   Experience of or commitment to decolonising the curriculum

     

Administration

•   Ability to contribute to School/Departmental processes

•   Ability to assess and organise resources effectively

•   Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader administration processes
