In September 2014 The European School The Hague opened the first three years of Secondary education. The school is growing gradually and as of September 2016 we will offer the first five years of the seven year programme. Our school prepares students for the prestigious European Baccalaureate which gives access to universities in all of the 28 EU Member states.
The Secondary school is looking for enthusiastic and creative teachers of English as a foreign language (EAL) in the English section.
Secondary Teachers of English as a foreign language – EAL (0.24 fte or 0.9 fte)
to teach in the age range of 11-18. The posts start in August 2016.
The teacher of English should develop pupils’ abilities to communicate effectively in speech and writing and to listen and respond with accuracy and confidence. They should encourage pupils to be enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable speakers, writers and readers. The ideal candidate would assist pupils to develop as effective learners when transferring these skills to other learning contexts.
Requirements
- fully qualified teacher status (for example UK QTS or its equivalent)to teach English with experience of teaching EAL at Secondary school level
- minimum of a Bachelor Degree (with a Master’s degree preferred) in a relevant subject
- Fluent speaker of English
- experience teaching English Language 1 and/or Language 2 up to university entrance good ICT skills and an understanding of ICT use in an educational context is essential
Recommendations
- preferably 5 years’ experience teaching in Secondary schools in an international context
- experience in working with pupils whose first or second language may not be English
- experience in a pastoral role
- knowledge of other EU languages is an advantage
- experience teaching English in the equivalent to EB, IB or GCE A level
- a willingness to be involved in extra-curricular activities

The European School The Hague (ESH) is part of Rijnlands Lyceum Foundation (in Dutch: Stichting het Rijnlands Lyceum). Rijnlands Lyceum Foundation is an ambitious foundation that offers both primary and secondary education and national and international education. The 1100 staff members at eight schools provide innovative quality education to more than 7000 students with a focus on global citizenship.
The ESH is a unique school. We were established in 2012 to educate the children of employees of European Union institutions. We provide a multilingual and multicultural education to Early Years, Primary and Secondary school children culminating in the European Baccalaureate. We are an officially Accredited European School, partly administered and financed by the Dutch national education system, and accredited by the Board of Governors of the European Schools since December 2012. Our ESH pupils are future citizens of Europe and the world. As such, they need a range of competences to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. In 2006 the European Council and European Parliament adopted a European Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning. Curriculum
ESH uses the European Schools curriculum. The curriculum incorporates the established 8 Key Competences. Learning is planned in a cross-curriculum manner, linking concepts and skills across subject areas. We also strive to include our core values in our teaching.
Early Years involves a cycle of 2 – 2.5 years and the Primary cycle, 5 years. Secondary education in the European Schools lasts for a total of seven years divided into three cycles.

Working at ESH
The ESH has favourable Dutch social and working conditions, and offers a fantastic working environment, located in the international zone of The Hague (in Dutch: Den Haag). The Hague is a cosmopolitan city with a large expat population and as such offers excellent housing, health and transport facilities. The ESH maintains a high standard of quality education and therefore we request applicants to provide details of three referees, of which one must be the most recent employer, or the one prior to the current employer. Requirements for teaching positions:
