Job overview

Leicester Grammar School is one of the UK's top-performing co-educational HMC independent day schools. We are looking to appoint a self-employed oboe teacher from September 2021, following the retirement of our current teacher, Mrs Rosie Curtis, after many years of excellent service.

Successful applicants for the role will be committed teachers across the age and ability range and be keen to introduce pupils to the oboe for the first time. An enthusiasm for the recorder and the cor anglais will be an added advantage and there may be opportunities to lead chamber ensembles such as recorder groups or wind quintets.

Instrumental lessons in the Music Department at the School are available to around 1200 pupils, including pupils at the Junior School (Reception - Year 6). Whilst efforts to recruit new pupils are likely to be successful, the Trust does not guarantee a particular number of pupils for any teacher. There are currently five enthusiastic oboe pupils in the school; both the Senior and Junior school would welcome a face-to-face recruitment drive as we recover from the difficulties caused by the pandemic. We would be keen for this to take place in the summer term, especially with our Year 7 classes; some individual lessons would be able to take place next term as a result of this.

The Music Department has adapted well to the difficulties caused by Covid, continuing to offer face-to-face instrumental lessons in the vast majority of cases, with occasional lessons taking place online as required. The School provides well-ventilated and spacious rooms for teaching that can be equipped with perspex screens, anti-viral sprays and wipes as required.

Visiting Music Teachers at the Leicester Grammar School Trust (comprising Leicester Grammar School, Leicester Grammar Junior School and Stoneygate School) are self-employed and as such bill parents directly for lessons, providing their own contracts. Charges to parents are agreed annually by the Visiting Instrumental Teachers in discussion with the Trust and are currently £40 per hour.

Candidates are invited to apply by submitting a one-page CV and covering letter addressed to Mr John Barker, Director of Music. Applications should be sent via email to Mrs Mary Bloomfield, Music Department Administrator: bloomfieldm@leicestergrammar.org.uk

Those invited to interview will then be asked to complete a LGS Trust application form.

The closing date for applicants is Tuesday 16th March and interviews will take place as soon as possible after this date and by Tuesday 23rd March at the latest.
