SENCO – Full Time 

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, empathetic, innovative and qualified SENCO to join and lead a thriving SEN department at Riverston School. Our core purpose is to offer beskpoke learning and care to all students  so as to improve student outcomes and  enrich lives outside of the classroom.  Riverston are now accepting applications for this full time, permanent SENCo role. The successful candidate will be responsible for the academic, pastoral development and well-being of all students with an SEN or Disability related need.  

A core responsiblility will be supporting  the implementation of the SEND policy and associated legal requirements across the whole school. The applicant will have an in-depth knowledge of the SEN Code of Practice 2014 and the end to end EHCP process. As the SENCO, you will be responsible for maintaining the relationships with parents, teachers and external contacts to ensure the steady progress of pupils, reviewing paperwork and chairing EHCP meetings with local authorities in attendance, and managing and monitoring the therapeutic intervention being delivered to ensure that the provision is of a consistently high standard. Experience of the SENDIST process is essential and candidates will be required to attend Tribunals when requested. 

This post would suit somebody who is an experienced and fully qualified SENDCo or someone who is currently completing their NASENCO. They should demonstrate a commitment to collaboration as they will work with the Director of SEND, our Leadership Team as well as the wider school community. Together, you will help to steer the growth of our school’s SEND Support to ensure our provision is outstanding in all areas. 

Ideally you will have gained the NASENCO qualification, and should also demonstrate an understanding of outstanding classroom practice across the school ability range from Year 7 upwards. You will also teach some lessons per week (loading to be confirmed).

  • Possess the NASENCO award 
  • Flexible in their work ethic and willing to commit to be engaged in school life to the full. A team player. 
  • Excellent at organisation and communication 
  • A strong leader and committed to providing the highest standards of provision for SEND pupils. 
  • Experienced in rigorous tracking and monitoring of children’s progress and working within the SEND Code of Practice. 
  • An excellent communicator, with a strong commitment to working in partnership with parents, governors, local authorities, external agencies and the community. 
  • Experienced in managing and leading a committed team of enthusiastic Learning Support Assistants  
  • Experienced in the SENDIST process and court proceedings

About Riverston School

Riverston School is a mixed, specialist SEND independent school with Nursery, Senior School and Sixth Form departments situated in Lee, south-east London.

Riverston School was founded in 1926 and has been family-owned since 1956. The school is housed in four adjacent Victorian houses. Recent refurbishments and upgrades have delivered a coffee shop, a sixth-form area and a centre for textiles, food technology and skills for life.

Riverston School’s main aims are: to provide a safe, supportive and caring environment for everyone; to offer a modern and varied curriculum that works for each individual student; and to equip pupils with a range of skills for their future life, encompassing the academic, social, physical, creative and moral skills everyone needs.

While the curriculum concentrates on traditional academic subjects, children’s physical and creative development is prioritised too. Students learn English, maths, history, geography, RE, languages, ICT, science and business studies, alongside drama, food technology, music, design and technology, art and choir. They also have the opportunity to take part in junior sports leadership awards and athletic challenges such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
