Job overview

The Role

We are looking to appoint a creative, forward-thinking, passionate SEN Teacher with experience of teaching students with moderate learning difficulties and SEMH. As a class teacher, you will take a creative and flexible approach to teaching pupils, tailoring your delivery to their educational needs. You will ensure delivery of the school’s alternative curriculum maximises students’ development and achievement. The role will be challenging but rewarding in equal measure.

You will be based in the Learning Support Department, working with a small group of students in KS4 and joining an established team of Learning Support Assistants, Higher Level Teaching Assistants and a dynamic, forward-thinking SENDCo with a wide range of experience. You will have excellent communication skills and enjoy building nurturing relationships. You will be willing to deliver a range of entry-level courses and have excellent written English skills. You will enjoy working in collaboration with members of the wider school community and have the drive to be part of a new approach to supporting students with SEN under the mainstream umbrella.

In this role, you will:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver learning activities in line with the alternative curriculum on offer and making use of the resources available.
  • Deliver effective lessons that are adapted for individual students’ learning needs.
  • Ensure the required standards of classroom management and student behaviour are met.
  • Monitor, evaluate and review practice and revise strategies to ensure students engage and underperformance is challenged.
  • Be prepared to share strategies and teaching methods with the school community.
  • Be flexible and highly creative.
  • Attend staff and parent meetings in line with the school calendar.
  • Ensure learner portfolios are managed, moderated and in line with subject specifications.

About Us

Our Ofsted Report 2020 says, “The school has a warm and welcoming atmosphere” and “Pupils at The Highcrest Academy happily live up to the school’s motto of ‘aspire and achieve’”.

All who work at the academy reinforce our six virtues linked to our motto (Ambition, Sensitivity, Purpose, Integrity, Resilience and Eloquence), helping us instil a culture of excellence that runs throughout every strand of our Academy.

Situated in the leafy Chilterns and within easy reach of Central London, Highcrest is culturally and academically diverse and is the only academy in Buckinghamshire that caters for students of ‘all abilities’. Some of our students need all your support, whilst others need to be challenged and stretched. Our inclusive and successful House system, a wide range of clubs, visits and trips helps to bring our whole school community together.

There are approximately 1,000 students on roll, including the Sixth Form. Recent additions to our site include a gym and restaurant/coffee shop for both staff and students, as well as a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre.

In Return

Highcrest offers an extensive CPD package for more experienced teachers. This provision of training has been praised as outstanding by an external assessor and highlighted in the local press.

“Staff feel very well supported by senior leaders. According to staff, they feel valued because senior leaders are approachable…”. Ofsted Report February 2020

A thriving and friendly academy in the heart of the community, with staff recognition schemes, free gym and staff sports teams, to counter the free breakfast, “Friday Treats” and on-site coffee shop!

The Highcrest Academy is a vibrant, happy school in which every student is given the opportunity to develop their talents and to flourish as individuals. We are relentless in our pursuit of building a cohesive culture and curriculum that matches the varied needs of our students.

Our motto, ‘Aspire and Achieve’ is central to our philosophy. We are committed to making sure that every student makes outstanding progress and succeeds both academically and in terms of their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Indeed, we value a strong work ethic and aim to develop, sometimes hidden or unsuspected talent, into fruition.

At Highcrest, we are committed to setting high expectations for the conduct of our pupils and believe it is crucial for there to be an established culture in which all are able to excel. We want all the children who come to the academy to enjoy their learning and to become thoughtful, articulate, confident and responsible members of society.

Our personalised curriculum is enhanced by numerous extra-curricular opportunities, community and business projects, national and international competitions and a thriving House System. This encourages staff and students of all ages to work together.

The Highcrest Academy is the only all-ability academy in Buckinghamshire and is a culturally diverse, over-subscribed school, making it a fantastic place to teach. There are approximately 1000 students on roll, including Sixth Form. We know from pupil surveys that students are proud of our school and, when parents have been surveyed, the level of parent satisfaction has also been exceptionally high.

We are very aware that The Highcrest Academy is part of a community and we work hard to instil a sense of local and global responsibility. This means that students take part in many activities which enhance the local community, and have a real understanding of their role in improving the work community.

Our mission is to create a positive, secure and happy learning environment where all students experience success, friendship, respect and self-worth; where students value and celebrate the diverse talents and cultural heritage of all, and achieve their full potential in becoming responsible citizens, respecting the rights of other and contributing to our society.
