Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic person who would like to join our friendly and hardworking team as an assistant to our SENDCO. This post would suit someone who has experience working as a teaching assistant with children with a range of SEND needs or someone undertaking a teaching and learning degree with future aspirations to be a SENDCO. The post is full time but will accommodate any requirements for release if studying. West Town Primary Academy is a vibrant and happy place to work where all the staff are dedicated to the support of our fantastic and eager to learn children.  

The ideal candidate will be able to work under the direction of our Assistant principal for inclusion and as part of our inclusion team to: 

  • Provide welfare and academic support for pupils on the SEND register including pupils with EHCPs 
  • Update pupil records as appropriate and collate and prepare information relating to assessments, EHCPs and referrals to other agencies 
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of APDRS for students and gather information from pupils, parents, staff, and other professionals for the completion of statutory paperwork before annual reviews.  
  • Offer practical support and advice to class teachers and teaching assistants, enabling them to offer high-quality provisions to SEN students.   
  • Deliver lunch, break and afterschool activities and interventions to vulnerable pupils when necessary. 


We are looking for someone who: 

  • Is committed to helping children succeed, particularly where they have barriers to their learning 
  • Is skillful in working with children with Special Needs, including those with ASD, SEMH and disabilities 
  • Has a good knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice 
  • Is kind, friendly and understanding 
  • Has effective communication and administrative skills and who will commit time and enthusiasm to our team 
  • Can act on their own initiative  
  • Can form positive and caring relationships with children which motivates them to learn, grow and be confident 
  • Demonstrates excellent classroom practice with high standards of teaching and learning 
  • Is willing to contribute to the ethos and wider community of the academy 
  • Is motivated, passionate, and reflective about their work
