Job overview

SENDCO

Required from January 2023 (Full-time/ 0.8FTE considered)

Salary: MPS/UPS (Fringe) + TLR1a-c (£8,291-£10,199 dependent on experience/ qualifications)

We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

Are you an inspirational teacher with a passion for SEND provision, ready and able to advocate for, support and lead our SEN students in their learning journeys?

We seek to appoint a proactive, resilient and motivated colleague who has a clear understanding of what makes an outstanding SEND provision and how it can be maintained. You will have whole-school strategic impact, leading the school’s SEND dedicated team and championing ‘Quality First Adapted Teaching’ across our well-qualified and experienced teaching staff. Students’ behaviour is exemplary and parental support is strong at St. Mary’s which provides an excellent environment to develop your SEND calling further; you’ll have the time, resources and support to ensure that you will be a success.

All applicants must have QTS, experience of working with children with a wide variety of learning needs, including pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties, and have completed the National SENCO Qualification (or a willingness to undergo training to gain this qualification within the required timeframe). Ideally, you’ll be Level 7 qualified in Psychometric Testing/ Access Arrangements, have experience in handling sensitive safeguarding cases (Level 2 DSL trained) and an understanding how to support Children Looked After.

The post includes a significant reduction in teaching hours to enable the role to be undertaken effectively. Teaching allocation will be in the region of 15-20 hours per fortnight, including curriculum time dedicated to ‘Learning Support’ particularly in the KS4 curriculum and other interventions. You must able to teach across the age and ability range. At this stage, applications are encouraged from all subject disciplines. However, teaching in a core discipline such as English, Science and RE may be an advantage. You will be responsible for the pastoral care and academic progress of the SEND students, including behaviour, attitude to learning, safeguarding and attendance issues. You must be able to demonstrate an ability to lead and manage the Learning Support team, so that students are able to flourish academically, spiritually, physically and pastorally. Fulfilling the role includes co-ordinating and liaising with the Senior Leadership Team, teachers and Learning coordinators to ensure continuity and progression, other teaching and support staff together with the Local Authority, external agencies and parents/carers.

Our Academic performance figures are consistently strong; our school has enjoyed a £7m refurbishment programme over the last few years (about to complete April 2022), the school has expanded to 6FE (with one year group at 7FE), and demand for school places has never been higher. Our Section 48 report gives you a true flavour of the school – students enjoy coming to school and there are deep foundations with a strong Catholic ethos running through the entire community.

We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers. We can offer you a dedicated, supportive Governing Body, motivated staff and students, and a fantastic environment in which to work.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Closing date:   27th June 2022 10.00 a.m. Interviews:  July 2022

Apply in writing using the forms available on our website www.stmarys.net: Teacher Application Form, Consent to Obtain References Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form.  Applicants are reminded that they should read the Notes to Applicants before completing an application. Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
