Berkhamsted School is a Church of England, all-through, co-educational, independent school  in Hertfordshire. Berkhamsted is a historic market town, once the residence of Geoffrey  Chaucer and Thomas Becket. The boys' grammar school was founded in 1541 and the girls'  in 1888. The two merged in 1996 and the on-site day nursery was acquired in 2012.

Offering a 'diamond' structure that combines the best of both single-sex and co-educational  teaching, Berkhamsted Boys and Girls are taught separately from 11 – 16, enabling them to  flourish academically, with numerous co-educational activities, trips, and events, before  coming back together again for a co-educational Sixth Form (Berkhamsted Sixth).

There are approximately 2000 pupils at Berkhamsted School, aged 3 months - 18 years.  Boarding is available from the age of 11 onwards.

The history and character of the school are integral to the dedication and responsibility of  students. This sense of identity spreads across each of the school federation’s five sites,  fostering a community where all staff and students aim high with integrity, be adventurous,  and serve others.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards, CCF, community service, work experience and Young Enterprise  are all offered, alongside a wide range of clubs, sports, societies, or courses. Regular school  theatre productions, orchestral and choral concerts achieve high standards of performance.  The Girls and Boys School come together for a range of these activities.

With separate Pre-Prep and Prep sites, two Senior School campuses, the School is well  equipped with a range of facilities. Amongst other facilities, there are Sixth Form centres  located on the two Senior School campuses, Careers libraries, House rooms, Deans’ Hall (an  Assembly Hall) and Centenary Theatre (a modern 500-seat theatre also used for concerts  and theatre productions).

Recreational and sports facilities include extensive playing fields, Eton Fives courts, Squash  courts, Tennis courts, Gymnasium, Drama studio, Music school and Art studios, Sports Hall,  25m indoor swimming pool and a state-of-the-art Design Centre, and a Chapel. More recent  additions include a new sports pavilion and changing rooms at the School’s Chesham Road  Playing Fields and upgrades to the Football and Rugby pitches, as well as a high ropes course  at the Haresfoot site and a floodlit 4G AstroTurf sports pitch at Kings.

ISI report

“Pupils are very well educated in accordance with the school’s aims. Pupils of all ages  demonstrate good levels of knowledge, understanding and skills across the curriculum. They  apply mathematical and scientific concepts well and use technical vocabulary with precision  and confidence.”
